I've seen McNair sober and I've seen him not-so-sober. Two different people. If he had a "dark side" that was it, Mr. cdcox. Probably no different than 90 percent of the posters on this board.

I've avoided this thread for the most part, but I finally had to say that he wasn't the freak or asshole that Ms. memyselfI wants to make him out to be in order to impress people with her long-distance psychoanalytic abilities.

Let me tell you what McNair was like. He was a big, friendly, overgrown, good-hearted kid. A really nice guy. That's what he was like. The transition out of football wasn't easy for him. He tried to make his marriage work, but it didn't. Nevertheless, he took care of his wife and children financially. He was generous with them. He kept his local foundation going throughout his move to Baltimore and after. He spent a lot of time helping kids in the community. He was excited about his new restaurant. It gave him the direction he needed.

With the marriage on the rocks, he got mixed up with a crazy chick. Far from "enabling" as Ms. memyselfI and you suggest, many of his friends thought she was taking advantage of him. The crazy chick went nuts when he tried to move on. Those are the facts.

FAX
You describe the Steve McNair I know through the media. FTR, I loved the guy but I'm not going to gloss over his failings that led to some very self destructive behavior and completely blame some 'crazy chick.' She was nearly half his age and a high school drop out who moved away from home at 17. There was some crazy going on but it would seem the one with the stable life (even with a bad marriage) getting involved with someone like that is the one who is acting crazy. It seems there were two Steve's and one of them had people around him who were not looking out for him or his family. If his good friends knew then how was it that his wife didn't? That is some serious cover up and was not doing him any friendly favors.

The guy was an attractive rich man beloved in his community. You cannot convince me this girl was his one chance at true love outside of his failing marriage.

And FTR, I did describe the scenario you mentioned about transitioning away from football in one of my earlier posts. I get that. No one was expecting him (or anyone else in similar circumstances) to be a saint or even be good. Do understand their shock when they find out he was being stupid and crazy. Also, understand their willingness to hold his actions accountable for his outcome and not completely blame the girl.

The whole thing is a totally fucked up mess, to be honest, Mr. RNR. In a very strange way, this thread has been good for me, though. I can now understand how people can create an incorrect impression of someone based on news reports.

I finally had to say something though. The fact is that McNair wasn't any different than you or me. He didn't deserve to wind up like this.

I'm sorry that you lost a friend, Mr. Fax. And I'm glad you commented, attempting to set the record straight (though I'm sure there will be many people who still doubt your claims).

I would have liked to share some stories about Michael Jackson - some stories about the real MJ - not the one beleaguered by the press.

But alas, people have made up their opinions, facts or not, concerning MJ.

May they both rest in peace.

I loved him. My whole family did. I cried when I heard the news. I didn't bat an eye when that bat shit crazy Jacko died. This was just stunning and shocking and sad beyond belief. I'm sorry you lost your friend. I'm sorry we all lost him. FWIW, I have not lost one iota of respect or love for Steve McNair the human being. I am upset that his kids are having to deal with the consequences of his actions...

that is not fair. That pisses me off.

I can understand that, FAX. I understand that he was a nice guy and terrific for the community. I just take issue with people acting like this was some act of a gold-digging bitch who just went psycho, while McNair was the unfortunate victim who did nothing wrong but cheat. To be fair, while you know his side of the story, you don't know hers. I'm guessing you don't know what he told her or promised her in private. I would "guess" that her friends probably thought McNair was taking advantage of her too, maybe promising more than he was actually willing to give. Maybe treating her like a booty call, when she thought there was something more. I have too many buddies who do this to their girlfriends, and it drives me nuts. And the worst part is, no matter how much they treat them like shit, it only makes them more dependent. But they're still my buddies and I know that that doesn't define them. Just as it shouldn't define McNair (and I don't think it will).

As you said, I don't think it should shape his legacy. He was a terrific football player and I"m sure a terrific human being, who had some personal flaws. Much like DT. It's the story I tell about Chad Johnson to everybody--he's actually a terrific human being in person. I'm not trying to say McNair was a bad person, but I think the girl probably has a reputation to protect too. And it sounds like they both had a hand in the trouble.

nope. I don't believe that one bit after seeing her pictures. 'Naive' girls don't put it out there for the taking...

Dennise, You used the phrase "culturally sheltered" describing this girl in an earlier post. I had guessed (seems quite correctly) before you posted these pics that she was anything but sheltered. I have seen many Iranian-American girls who outparty and outwild their American counterparts. THEY and not the "culturally sheltered" ones are usually the ones who end up in the drug, sex wild party scene and vulnerable to this kind of ending. Unfortunately there are lots of cases like this.
