Bite me haters.

Quote:
Today the Chiefs ran a session of 11-on-11 where the running backs were responsible for picking up the blitzes. Running back Larry Johnson made a perfect blitz pick-up on the drill’s second play and gave quarterback Matt Cassel time to find wide receiver Terrance Copper. Cassel was 5-6 in the drill.
HE IS WHIPPED!
Quote:
Running back Larry Johnson fumbled the football and, without being told, took his jog to the fence.
Also, Pollard sucks.

Quote:
Gutierrez then had a pass to full back Jed Collins. Safety Bernard Pollard was there to make the defensive stop. Pollard was able to help the ball fall incomplete, but coaches and offensive players had some speculation about whether Pollard committed pass interference on the play or not. A verdict was never reached on the matter.

Camp Practice Update 8/12 P.M.
August 12, 2009 - Bob Gretz |

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The Chiefs worked long and hard in their second practice of Wednesday and wrapped up a day where the offense got a little bit better.

One group that’s struggling on the offensive side is the quarterbacks. Whether it’s Matt Cassel, or Brodie Croyle, or Tyler Thigpen there is no consistency out of that position. I’ll leave Matt Gutierrez out because he doesn’t get enough snaps.

Here’s a perfect example from Wednesday’s P.M. practice. Thigpen was in and connected on a long pass play to WR Taurus Johnson that beat CB Ricardo Colclough. Johnson ran a nice route and Thigpen delivered the ball right on the button.

On the next play, Thigpen stood in against a heavy rush and ended up jumping up in the air to throw the ball over the defensive front. Only problem is there was no receiver he was throwing it too. It looked like he was trying to throw it away, but it was a dangerous pass, the type that get picked off on a regular basis.

Consistency is what the Chiefs lack right now on the offensive side of the ball and it starts with the triggermen at quarterback.

Other notes from the afternoon work:

– The same six players who missed the morning practice also missed the afternoon work: ILB Zach Thomas, Gs Wade Smith and Tavares Washington, RB Kolby Smith, TE Jake O’Connell and S DaJuan Morgan.

– In a one-on-one pass protection/rush drill, NT Ron Edwards rocked rookie guard Colin Brown with a blow under the chin that knocked his head back.

– WR Amani Toomer showed a burst of speed on a route and grabbed a long throw with his fingertips.

– Rookie WR Quinten Lawrence heard about it from the coaches after he ran the wrong route.

– S Jon McGraw picked off a Thigpen pass.

– OLB Andy Studebaker continues to take a few plays at deep snapper, but continues to be high with his snaps.

– WRs Rodney Wright and Lawrence are the only guys working as punt returners.

From 810's website (http://www.810whb.com/article/1263):

Notes from Nate Bukaty at Tuesday’s Chiefs practice:

Just one practice for the Chiefs on Tuesday, so the intensity level was high. Once again, the defense seemed to get the better of the offense. It was one of the warmer days in camp thus far, and Todd Haley liked the way his team handled the heat.

The competition for the backup quarterback spot continues. On Monday, Brodie Croyle worked with the second team, while Tyler Thigpen practiced with the third string. This morning, the Chiefs released an updated depth chart, which listed Croyle as the backup. But in Tuesday’s practice, Thigpen took all of the snaps with the second team. Neither guy is doing anything to take hold of the job, in my estimation. Croyle threw several picks on Monday, and Thigpen once again was wildly inconsistent on Tuesday.

Dwayne Bowe continues to find himself relegated to the second and third teams. Terrance Copper, Devard Darling, and Bobby Engram got most of the work with the starters. After practice, Haley singled out Copper, Engram and Amani Toomer as guys who’ve taken pride in catching passes in traffic and blocking.

Rodney Wright has also drawn public praise from Haley, but quite a bit of criticism on the field. Haley jumped on Wright, who is working as the first punt/kickoff returner, for dropping a punt. He also gave Wright an earful when he had a chance to make a great catch in the left corner of the end zone, but only got one foot in bounds. Wright had to spin his body around to adjust to the pass, but Haley didn’t see that as an excuse. “Body Control Rodney!” Haley screamed across the field. “Get your foot down! You’re spinning around like a ballerina!” Sometimes, it’s better to hear the coach jumping your case. That means he’s paying attention to what you’re doing on the field.

Larry Johnson had several open running lanes, when the Chiefs worked on the power running game. This looks to be the strength of the offense. However, it appears to me that the coaches still have little faith in Johnson’s pass blocking, as Jackie Battle and Jamaal Charles got almost all of the work in passing situations. Once, when Johnson was asked to stay in and block, he was predictably blown up by the linebacker.

Jovan Belcher continues to impress at middle linebacker. Haley complimented the rookie free agent after another big hit on a run up the middle. As I stated yesterday, Belcher is a raw project, but keep an eye on him as a guy who can help in special teams this year, and possibly develop into something more than that down the road.

Haley continues to hammer away at his team about importance of situational awareness. Right before the ball was snapped on a third and three, Haley blew the whistle. “Hey D-J!” He yelled at linebacker Derrick Johnson, “what’s the down and distance?” Johnson didn’t respond fast enough for Haley’s liking. “You always have to be aware fellas! You always have to be aware!”

The Chiefs are back to two-a-days on Wednesday. Check back in for a full recap.

OK, so who the hell is Nick Bukaty?

I had never seen his name until the last couple of days.

Bukake is a reporter for 810 radio. Does a decent enough job covering the Chiefs and Royals. It's the writing that's new; he's been with 810 for awhile.

The last few training camp reports have said that Thomas works out on rehab for a bit and then disappears. It sounds like he might have a concussion of some degree. Hopefully he can come back.

What good is that when the so-called "coach on the field" becomes one of hte major problems on defense?

Can't lead by example if you, yourself can't make a good example.

Well then he needs to quit and retire then. It's not like he's a QB that doesn't get hit as often, he's a MLB for crying out loud that pretty much is involved with heavy contact on almost every play.

It does no good to the team if you can't make it on to the field.

Can't make the club in the tub......especially if you're damn near 37 yrs old.
