This Sanchez Chap

I fully admit that I'm not very savvy when it comes to football, but while watching the Chiefs game this weekend, CBS suddenly turned to the Jets' game instead (I'm not really sure why). Anyway, the Jets had a QB named Sanchez that seemed really good a throwing the ball (which is, I think, the primary goal of a QB). So, I started thinking: "I think this is the chap who the Chiefs could have drafted this year, but didn't."

Is that correct?

If so, how much are the Jets paying this Sanchez fellow in comparison to Cassel?

Thanks.

Didn't everyone pick the Jets to be a last place team that won like 4 or 5 games?

Sanchez is doing good there is no doubt. Perhaps a better comparison of Cassel and Sanchez is what Cassel did last year behind New Englands O line to what Sanchez is doing behind the Jets O line.

The line doesn't have to come first. Just ask the Colts. And before someone spouts off, no, I'm not saying Sanchez is P. Manning, just that the Dirty Dirty is going to be a hell of a lot better player than Cassel.
I don't know how anyone can know that.

I think Sanchez will be better, but I think once you give Cassel at least something to work with, it won't be by a whole lot.

I just don't understand the double standard that the same people who are suggesting that Sanchez is winning games because of his ability are the same ones who insist that Cassel only won games because of his supporting cast. Cassel last year, like Sanchez this year, won games because he wasn't ask to do everything by himself. I don't understand why Sanchez just "knows how to win" while Cassel only won because of his supporting cast.

They're definitely a surprise. But nobody expected that defense to be as dominant as they've been either. Rex Ryan hasn't just been rookie coach of the year, so far he's arguably been coach of the year... period.

It's going to be by a considerable margin, IMO.

I don't think Cassel is as accurate and there are real questions about his ability to play from under center.

I think Cassel is a QB whom a team can definitely win with, but he'll never get into the "elite" category.

His accuracy is fine. It's just his long-range accuracy that needs work.

I don't know when playing under center become such a big "make or break" criteria. There aren't questions about his ability to play under center like there were for Thigpen. Cassel's done fine playing under center and he's taken several snaps under center this year. His footwork is fine. Everything is fine. He just needs more reps. It just so happens that his protection wasn't nearly as good as people thought--even Brady is struggling to get protection this year out of NE's line.

The only thing that I think he needs major work with is getting rid of the ball quicker, but that's something he improved on markedly over time in New England. And given how quickly he was hit, it was pretty remarkable that he was able to get off as many passes as he did in Philly.

I haven't seen anything that suggests that Cassel can't be a top-tier QB with time and a better supporting cast.

How much more time? He should be in his prime now.

Define top-tier. If you mean top 10, ok. Top 5? No chance.

He definitely deserves at least a half season to get comfortable with the offense and at least 1-2 games where he has actual protection. Is that too much to ask for?

I don't see why he couldn't be a top 10 QB. I don't think he'll ever be Drew Brees, but I doubt Sanchez will be either. I don't care where he ranks as a QB. Eli Manning isn't a top 5 QB. Arguably, he's barely top 10, but he's a great asset to the Giants squad anyway.

Here's the problem...Sanchez unquestionably has more upside then Cassel does, so if we're having a debate about who's better today...that's a serious issue.

The difference in the Jets so far is their defense giving up HALF the points they allowed last year. You're not going to lose often holding teams to 11 ppg. They're actually scoring 4 fewer points/game on offense this year than they did in '08, and heavily balanced towards the run over the pass (104 runs/84 passes). Which is exactly what you would want with a rookie QB, and Sanchez has done his job as well as any rookie could. I'd imagine if the Chiefs were able to do the same thing with Cassel, he's probably have really good numbers. Hell, he's completing 2/3 of his passes without a running game, a line or receivers.

300-yard games mean nothing. Hell, Thigpen was a pretty decent fantasy QB last year.

It's not even an arguable statement to say that Sanchez has more upside. There's a reason that he was a top-5 pick. He has all the tools, physical and otherwise, to be elite.

Now, that doesn't mean that Cassel won't prove to be the better of the two (which won't happen, but for the sake of conversation...).
