Gang of Raccoons Attack Florida Woman!

Lakeland, Florida-- A Lakeland woman is recovering from serious injuries in the hospital after sheriff's investigators say she was "gang attacked" by five raccoons Saturday afternoon.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says 74-year-old Gretchen Whitted was trying to shoo the animals away from her front door when they suddenly attacked.

"When she fell down, they enveloped her," said Sheriff Judd in a news conference called Sunday to warn the public of the aggressive raccoons.

"She's literally bitten and scratched from face and the chest all the way down through the legs."

Raccoons are known to be aggressive when going after food, but the sheriff called Saturday's attack very unusual.

"Not in all my years in Florida have I known of a gang attack by raccoons on an individual," Sheriff Judd said.

Christy Steinmetz lives next door to Whitted and ran across the street when she heard her neighbor's screams.

"I've never seen anything like it," Steinmetz said of the attack and her neighbors deep wounds. "They were deep lacerations. You could see flesh."

Sheriff Judd called a news conference Sunday to warn parents in the Lakeland neighborhood about the potential danger.

"They've attacked once. If someone frightens them, will they attack again?" Judd asked.

Polk County Animal Control officers fanned out, placing traps across the neighborhood, in hopes of finding the raccoons involved.

"Even if we capture a lot of raccoons [Sunday night], we can't be sure they are our suspect raccoons," Sheriff Judd said.

If caught, the animals will be tested for rabies and possibly destroyed

I've heard of this happening in Chicago - there was a pack of raccoons running wild in a cemetery on the north side that terrorized people.

City people crack me up.

had one go after my wife one time when she was out in the yard w/the weed whacker. heard her holler and there she was, keeping it away w/the whacker. i grabbed a stick of wood off the pile and trotted over to it and knocked it in the head. wailed on it a couple more times after it went down.

tossed the stick back on the wood pile and went back to the bbq grill to finish up my chops. she hauled the deceased down to the creek and tossed it in.
i'd have been pissed if she caused me to burn those chops.

Raccoons are pretty interesting creatures. They can be totally fearless to the point that it's easy to question whether they're rabid or just persistent/hungry/clumsy. They are the perfect height for punting though.

We had pet raccoons growing up. They were awesome pets.

you can get anywhere from $5-$30 for a decent raccoon pelt at the right time of year... we used to make ALOT of money off those things in high school..

Well thank goodness there will be no profiling in the case.

That's easy, just look for the raccoons making the weird hand motions and wearing their pants down around their asses.

The untold story is that she's been feeding them for weeks, first at a distance, then arms length, then from her lap, then she started hiding food in her beesnest hairdoo and in her socks.

The day of tragedy began when her grandson stitched cheetos throughout her dress. Those rodents didn't mess around.

We have some raccoons on campus (we're right on the lakes) that are insanely huge from raiding the cafeteria dumpsters.

I better start carrying my piece.

I used to camp and fish at a lake north of you. The racoons there were the size of black bears and brazen. Our first night of one camp, they stole every steak out of a closed and locked cooler, and those steaks were inside tupperware containers.

The next night, a big fatty came into camp, I stood up and walked over to give him a kick and he stood up on his hind legs, stretched out his arms and roared like he thought he was a polar bear.

I had my bow in the truck, and that is all I have to say on the rest of this topic.
