Dallas Cowboys scouting report: Kansas City Chiefs

Dallas Cowboysscouting report: Kansas City Chiefs

01:40 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 7, 2009
By RICK GOSSELIN / The Dallas Morning News

Kansas City quarterback Matt Casseland running back Larry Johnson can't wear enough padding to protect them from the punishment they are taking each week.

The Chiefs are in the opening stages of a rebuilding program under new general manager Scott Pioli. He inherited a 2-14 team and tried to address the offensive and defensive lines during the off-season. He also acquired what he believes to be his quarterback of the future in Cassel.

But one area Pioli could not adequately address was wide receiver. Holdovers Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradleyand veteran newcomers Bobby Engram and Bobby Wade share one common trait – a lack of game-breaking speed. They aren't going to run past anyone.

That allows defenses to single cover the two receivers on the flank and invest as many as nine players in run Defense and harassment of the quarterback.

So Johnson has nowhere to run and Cassel no time to throw. Cassel has already missed one game with an injury, and the Chiefs have allowed 13 sacks through four weeks.

Johnson brought a sterling 4.5-yard career average into the 2009 season. But he is averaging a paltry 2.6 yards in his 72 carries and is still looking for his first touchdown. This from a back who once scored 20 TDs in one season on his way to the 2005 AFC rushing crown.

The Chiefs are still searching for their first rushing touchdown of 2009. Baltimore's Willis McGahee has five touchdowns in 37 carries. The Chiefs have none in 109 carries. Kansas City's longest run is 24 yards by backup halfback Jamaal Charles.

When Cassel has time to throw, his receivers give him little after the catch. Bradley has a team-best 50-yarder, but he doesn't even start. Bowe's long is 29 yards, Wade's is 20 and Engram's is 18.

A lack of offensive plays has led to Kansas City's 0-4 start. The lack of offensive speed could make for another long afternoon Sunday against the Cowboys.

I don't care how much pressure he's under, until Cassel gets more than 1 legit receiving threat, all it tells me is that Rodgers has 10 much better teammates than Cassel.

We need that additional threat so that Cassel has someone else to throw behind.

Maybe it did if the direction of this franchise is going to be turned. I'm not happy about the suck but to truly change the Chiefs is gonna take a whole lotta of bad.

It doesn't hurt that Rodgers has a much stronger arm and is more accurate, especially down the field.

I can't count the number of times Cassel has thrown a simple slant and been on the receivers back hip or shoulder, he did it to Bowe 3 times Sunday, then people wonder why he doesn't catch the ball.

It's true that a lot of these throws have sucked, but, to be fair, Bowe should catch some of these balls, especially if he's a "#1".

When a guy is coming over the middle short and he's about to get hit by 2 guys 1 of them being a LB and you're throw is making him reach back behind the odds of him catching it aren't good.

So it's Rogers vs Cassel? What about the rest of the players? There is no comparison that's worth the time. It's just silly at this point.

Considering Cassel was named the franchise I'm going to compare him to other QB's and the other night the Packers were in a very Chiefs like position with their line and he dramatically outperformed Cassel.

It's not just the o line it's the WRs, TEs and RBs too. I'm not gonna give Cassel a freebie but I find it hard to judge him harshly at this point. If he starts to have time and mis plays then he's fair game. If he blows the reads or just misses his recievers when he should make the play then he's fair game. But right now there isn't a real good comparison. The circumstances are way to diffferent. Period..

PhilFree

P.S. He wasn't never namded the franchise.

We've had the same problem for a few years. It's practically impossible to accurately evaluate a quarterback's play when they're working behind an o-line this bad. I guess you can give them points for surviving, but that's about it.

Agreed. I think people underestimate the fact that our offense is still new to our players. Give it time. There is something in the air around the Chiefs....and I don't mean the scent of our running game. I can't explain it with facts..but I feel we are on the road to good things. I just hope we don't drive past it.

So what is this, Sanchez revealed himself to suck shit so now the constant comparison is Aaron Rodgers? Did Pioli have the opportunity to draft Rodgers?
