****Official Weight Loss and Exercise Thread****

I know that TinyE has the CP Weight Loss Challenge thread, but this is a new beginning for me. No losing weight for prizes, as that motivation ended on July 1st. This time I'm doing it for me. My goal is 75 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race. This time, the prize will be a whole new me.

Anyone else still battling the bulge? Here, hopefully, you can find more encouragement and tips on diet and exercise. Feel free to talk about discouragements, setbacks, frustrations, etc as well. We're here to help...at least I am.

Huh? Pasta and bread are terrible for dieters. Potatoes aren't great; sweet potatoes are better.

Don't take this the wrong way, but that's absolutely reeruned. Quitting it cold turkey is the only way to go. Otherwise, you just open yourself up to excuses as to why you ate an extra serving of pasta. Or why you allowed yourself to eat an extra slice of bread at dinner. By not quitting cold turkey, you're leaving the door open.

There are plenty of great foods you can still eat that aren't bread. Foods that don't raise your blood sugar higher and faster than table sugar like wheat does. You can eat FAT. Fat is tasty, and it's good for you.

Not only that, but eating things that spike your blood sugar only prevent your body from burning fat. Your body absolutely will not burn fat if your insulin is spiked up to deal with a higher blood sugar. You're only hurting yourself.

That sounds nice in theory problem is people who try to go cold turkey end up getting pissed off that they can't eat anything and stop dieting.

Lacking self-control is whose fault?

And what do you mean by "not being able to eat anything?" The only thing that you're *really* giving up by going low carb is most juices (you can still eat certain fruits) and cakes and confections.

Otherwise, what's not to like? Lots of tasty green veggies like broccoli and asparagus (asparagus smothered in butter and grilled is one of my favorite foods in the world). Lots of meat, including beef, turkey, fish, and chicken. Butter. Fats. Nuts. There's plenty to eat. Bacon. Eggs. Strawberries. Blueberries. Blackberries. Pomegranates. Pretty much any kind of berry, as they're lower in sugar than other fruits.

Sure, you miss out on "snack" foods. But those foods are empty calories, anyway. They do NOTHING for weight loss. They keep your insulin up and only prolong being fat.

Say what you want but an overwhelming majority can not immediately go cold turkey or they will quit doing it.

My favorite kind of food is italian and a diet like that says I can't eat any of that at all, which would highly piss me off.

The overwhelming majority of people in America are overweight, too. See any correlation? I do.

There's plenty of good Italian food you can eat on a low carb diet. Incidentally, even though Italians are quite often fat because of all the breads and pastas they eat, they have a low incidence of heart disease because of all the olive oil they use.

Those diets are reeruned.

Just watch your calorie intake. If you want to eat more italian food, exercise more.

But there's no reason you can't enjoy a plate of spaghetti and stay under your basal metabolic rate of calories for the day.

I do watch my calorie intake, I also realize if I'm eating something that isn't exactly good for you I should eat a smaller portion of it.

But this idea that I'm going to go forever not eating any pizza or lasagna sorry ain't happening.

I agree with you and disagree. Once in a while is fine. But it doesn't matter how many calories you're eating -- if you spike your insulin, you cannot burn fat during that time. For maximum fat burning, that's bad. So, you're kinda missing the point. Additionally, saying that low carb paleo diets are reeruned is, well, reeruned. Science and evidence argue otherwise.

What's funny is everyone I've ever known that did a low carb diet, lost weight then put it all back on.

The majority of people can't stay on that diet forever.

Macros are irrelevant. If you eat below your basal metabolic rate, you will lose weight, period.

Low carb can be a nice boost, however. I did it for awhile.
