****Official Weight Loss and Exercise Thread****

I know that TinyE has the CP Weight Loss Challenge thread, but this is a new beginning for me. No losing weight for prizes, as that motivation ended on July 1st. This time I'm doing it for me. My goal is 75 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race. This time, the prize will be a whole new me.

Anyone else still battling the bulge? Here, hopefully, you can find more encouragement and tips on diet and exercise. Feel free to talk about discouragements, setbacks, frustrations, etc as well. We're here to help...at least I am.

Disagree re: hard to maintain. I outlined why earlier in this thread.
To lose weight, people just need to eat better. If you focus on a low carb diet.... it just gives you an excuse to eat more fat.

Eating more fat is not a good tradeoff.

Given a choice, I'd live to eat. Instead I'm eating to live these days. So I try to cut out 'simple' carbs, reserve them for Feast Days and ban them otherwise. Oddly, don't miss 'em much after a while of 'weighing choices'. Medium protein/higher 'good' fat/'good' carbs watching the glycemic load is a surprisingly good diet for diabetics (and suggested by various diabetic support groups if not the ADA) So I think 'mediterrannean' or South Beach diets.
Much as I like bread I eat a lot more beans/legumes than bread these days and try to keep pasta both whole grain and rare. I try to sneak in some variety w/whole grains like wild rice, kasha, barley or wheat berries as 'flavoring' agents in a pilaf (and I use low-glycemic rice for my own purposes. I also highly recommend salsas - including fruit salsa - and chutney, relishes, etc...a few bites of very flavorful food like corn relish or mango salsa can make a bland piece of fish a lot more lively. Buy a few different bottles of good vinegar - balsamic, red wine, seasoned rice vinegars offer a lot of 'zing' for no calories/carb considerations. Beware of a lot of condiments, the sodium in mustard and carbs in ketchup can throw me 'off track' if I don't pay attention.
I eat a lot of things that are tasty because they have monounsaturated fats in 'em. Olives, olive oil, sesame oil, avocado - these replace 'baked snack foods' for me.
I have one more rule - if my Grandma would recognize it as food in 1950, I'll consider eating it. That rules out a heckuva lot of packaged foods.

Eating more fat is not a good tradeoff.

Again, based on what evidence? I've provided scientific research that counters that assertion and I can find a lot more.

Agree re: eating better.

Eggs and sausage for breakfast after I went for my four mile walk. I know, sausage probably isn't the best thing, but I went over to dad's, and it's what he had fixed while I was walking. At halftime, I hooked up the hosed and washed my car. Amazing how much exercise that is with stretching to get the middle of the top of the car and squatting down to wash lower part of the car and tires. I haven't eaten anything else since the late breakfast. I think dad is going to grill some steaks in a little while, so I may head back over there for dinner.

Thankfully I don't eat breakfast food so I haven't eaten bacon or sausage in years.

I did have pizza earlier but Sunday is my day where I give myself a free meal.

Seeing as I don't wake up till afternoon I just never think to eat breakfast food.

Oh well hopefully I can get down to 180, we'll see if it keeps going either way I'm proud of myself for dropping 40lbs.

Try not to worry about how much you eat so much as what you eat.

Try to eat smaller meals throughout the day and just take the edge off the hunger. Don't eat to get full.... eat not to be hungry.

Just to give you what I typically eat in a day. I start off with a protein shake and a piece of fruit after my early morning cardio... around 7:30am.

At around 10:00am, I grab a yogurt.

At noon, lunch usually consists of a sandwhich on whole wheat breat, and a raw vegetable of some sort. I absolutely love tomatoes.... so I usally have a couple of tomatoes sliced up.

Around 2:00 I get hungry, so I work it another piece of fruit, and a couple ounces of peanuts.

Around 4:00, I typically grab another yogurt.

I eat dinner with my family, but I have smaller portions. It's not the best, but eating with my wife and kids is important to me and we are all trying to eat healthier, so we do weight watchers meals, and lowfat recipes from magazines.

Then, I lift in the evenings and I have a protein shake after that.

I do protein shakes after my workout with Almond Milk. The one in the morning is with lowfat milk.

The key is to break up the meals over the day.

It keeps you less hungry and helps you not to gorge. It also keeps your metabolism consistent and your body doesn't have a bunch of excess callories all at one time that it will store as fat.

Also note that the more lean protein you take in, the better it is. The body has more trouble storing good protein as fat than carbs, sugars, or obviously fats.

I am by no means a nutrionist, but I do read articles every day.

A few 'diet' dishes I enjoy. Note that they often use lemon, olive oil and some parmesan cheese, so there aer more calories than if you just eat a bowl of boiled weeds. The few calories in the oil and parmasan cheese = a little goes a long way and means you won't burn out on dull tastes. For me, this stuff isn't a 'diet'...it's how I have to live, so there's no 'do without flavor for just a week or two'. But choose taste enhancers that suit your purpose - lemon juice, flavored vinegar, tabasco is your friend.

http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipe...ed-Onion-Salad

I make this w/triple rinsed canned beans (kidney beans, great northern) and add a splash of good vinegar or lemon. Be sure to look for olive-oil packed tuna.

http://southernfood.about.com/od/cro...s/r/bl98c6.htm

I replace higher-fat/calorie turkey thighs w/a small turkey breast, frozen is fine (thaw it first). Add a little crushed red pepper or sage if you like. Cook, pick meat from bones and enjoy. Use the resulting broth in garlic soup. (saute' 4 minced cloves garlic for 3 minutes, add a big pinch of crushed red pepper, thyme, black pepper and 2 cups broth, your turkey broth + canned, bring to boil. Add 1 beaten egg, stir well and turn off heat. Serve piping hot, w/spoonful of sherry. This helps 'break up' a head cold.)

I make about half of this recipe as it doesn't keep.

Ive got about 10-15 pounds to lose. Looking to go low carb. what's a good carb/calorie daily limit on a small frame if I want to lose this weight in about a month? Ive looked around but haven't really come across any good information.

If you're going from people thinking you look fine to being thin it's going to be impossible to do 15lbs in a month.
