We are not taking a QB in the first round

Just the official thread stating it. I'm not sure why some of you are already blowing this horn.

Just keep reading the title of this thread until it ****ing sinks in.

And I'm not even a Cassel fan, but he's going to be given more than 1 season to show he is or is not the guy.

I know all the bullshit arguments that will come forth.

"He's not a rookie, he's a seasoned vet" blah blah ****ing blah. I don't give a shit. I'm talking about reality. They gave him 60 mil. Even if Cassel never improves on this season (which I actually think he will, even if I'm not a fan), GM's don't admit to failures that quickly. Pioli will give him every chance to prove that he's right. He drafted him, he signed him to a 60 million dollar contract. Those of you you think that Pioli is going to turn right around and draft a QB with our first pick are ****ing morons. Yes, you are. It's ENTIRELY out of the question so please stop wasting discussion time with it.

Thank you and have a nice new years day.

Now if we just address Center and possibly LG (don't know if Waters will be back or not) and we have something.

That doesn't mean that Wade & O'Callaghan arn't replaceable. But with our other needs, they're serviceable for the time being.

Juggling all these guys on the right side of the line and hard work has actually kind of worked. IMO we need to upgrade a position on the right side and then we'll have maybe a decent line with some depth. Building from the bottom up? Of course Albert and all still need to get better and improve on a daily basis.

but Our True Fans will have a melt down if we draft a QB in round 1 when we have so many other needs. Where's the RT? Where's the next Tony G?

You want to see a meltdown?

Draft a RT or TE with our R1 pick.

There was absolutely no reason to stand pat and evaluate anything this year. None. We're already at ground zero, start building already, there is nothing to lose.

It doesn't take an entire season to determine that a team that only won 6 games over 2 years doesn't have much talent. In fact, the talent areas should have been even easier to identify. 95% of the board could have told you what players had a chance to excel this season. When only 5% of your team is actually talented, the evaluation process isn't very difficult.

"Rolling the dice on a bunch of new players?" What's the risk? Seriously?

And honestly, the didn't even really limit anything personnel wise. They brought in over 40 new players.
i understand it

1. if you have a rotten apple spoiling the whole bunch you either get rid of the entire bunch(which isn't really possible in the NFL) or you take the time to find out who's rotten before you bring in more apples.

2. if you have a brand new head coach who's gonna need some learning curve time you don't spend a bunch of cash on guys who may not be used the 1st year fully due to the HC learning curve.

3. if your team is already going to be in massive turmoil because of all the changes adding a bunch of new players is just gonna make it worse.

it's much safer to take it one step at a time ... which is what Pioli did.

now he knows the bad apples, the amount of suck, where the suck is focused and can move forward with some knowledge of where he stands. Haley has had a chance to realize he needs to calm the **** down and he didn't tell a bunch of high priced free agents to "**** off". He just told a bunch of scrubs to "**** off"

drafting a new QB would of dam well ruin the rookie .... almost ruined Cassel.

as shitty as this season was i can see the method to Pioli's madness even if it wouldn't of been my first choice.

The first ****ing step should have been to watch game tape, find out the team needs, and actually addressing those needs.

His first step was to change a scheme that should have been changed over the course of two or three seasons, rather than jumping right into it.

The way he has gone about the business of building this team has basically lead us to a 5 year plan, at best, to be an actual competitive team.

He could have had this team moving up far sooner.

Executive of the decade, my ass.

This whole, "Well this year is an evaluation year" is a bullshit excuse.

If he can't evaluate from film, then he's ****ing useless.

I've never seen a team transition to a new defense over two or three seasons. Generally coaches come in and no matter what institute schemes THEY are comfortable with. In our case Pioli wanted to run a 30 front. I think you'll see Pendergast gone this offseason and someone who runs a two gap 30 front brought in.

Hell, I'd love to see Wade Phillips get fired and be brought in, even though he runs a 1.5 gap 30 front. I don't think it's a coincidence that Merriman and Ware have had their best seasons when Phillips has been around.

I will say this, however, if Phillips were fired in Dallas, and the Chiefs hired him (about as likely as winning the lotto, but I digress), Boss Chief's idea of drafting Suh and and moving Dorsey to the nose would be a great idea.

The did a bit of a mix in but I it was only for their first season. After that they went full time to 30 fronts but bill uses that strange hybrid as well.

I don't like Dorsey at nose. I think he's just fine out there at end.

1. Why would it take time to find the rotten apples? Most of the wiser posters here were able to correctly identify them, even as casual fans. Why would it take Pioli this long? Assuming his accolades are accurate. And how do you explain the utter failure of the moderate moves they did make?

2. But they went ahead and did just that with the most important position on the field. Yet neglected other areas.

3. Worse? How? Worse than 6 wins in 2 years?

I just can't help but feel they should have had a much better idea of the bad apples, amount of suck, and focus of that suck before the season started. It's not like we're playing a ton of rookies anymore. There was ample tape on all the starters.

Thanks for the discussion bud.
