Cassel's contract

Okay, he signs for $63 million over 6 years. Eye popping #'s but lets look closer....

We have an announced $28 million guaranteed for the length of the contract.

$10 million roster bonus last year.(Basically a signing bonus). USA Today doesn't list this in their DB. Info is from the KC Star.

2009: $15 million paid out in salary(USA Today database)
2010: $16 million salary.(Widely published figure)

I'm not down on Cassell. I think the jury is still out on whether he will be a successful NFL QB for the next 10 years.

Just curious with all the Claussen rumors and Pioli saying they designed the contract to have all this front end money in an uncapped year. But, was it also so if he flops, it doesn't kill the cap in the future?

Just what will it cost us in salary/dead money to cut him after the 2010 season? Looks like to me thats its not a cap killer. But, does anyone know the #?

The sad thing is if we take a quarterback there will be tons of people on this board bitching. And the drafturbators will have to DO BATTLE ONCE AGAIN!

Role reversal from a year ago.

And bitching when he's not the week 1 starter, or put into the game the first time Cassel pisses all over himself (quarter 1, week 1).

And certain posters will have to keep talking about patience and the need NOT to rush the kid.

I'm all for drafting Clausen but not for making him the week 1 starter...

I'd rather have Croyle start than Clausen...

I'd like to see Cassel/Croyle/Clausen depth chart...

Give Cassel one more chance to show something...and give Clausen at least a full year just learning the "ropes"...no need to rush the guy when we'd have pretty decent depth and still be at least a year away from actually competing for anything worth competing for.

That's not the way I understand it.

I'm pretty sure almost all the guaranteed money is earned in 2 years in the form of roster bonuses. Because there's no signing bonus, that I see of, there isn't much dead money. Dead money only comes from prorated signing bonus money left on the contract.

I'd be thinking about getting Clausen some time in the second half of the season. Definitely some snaps after week 12-13 to get his feet wet and to see the speed of the game for himself.

Of course, the offensive line would have to be relatively healthy and competent, or all bets are off.

WTH dude, Brittle Croyle? He has a string of injuries going back to High school that have taken place during mainly routine plays. No matter the talent, if you can't stay on the field, you can't be counted on....the Chiefs have to move on.

There's a big roster bonus coming after next year for Cassel, so if he doesn't perform, odds are he gets cut loose...

I'm not saying because I think he's part of the future...I'm just saying I'd rather just keep him as 3rd string for a season.

Why is dead money being talked about?

While everything is uncapped there is no dead money, guys can be cut or traded with no dead money cap hit consequence.

It's still money you have to pay out.

And it is a business...especially in KC.

That money has already been paid though, other than the base salaries or roster bonuses.

There is essentially no penalty for releasing or trading someone right now. So there is no "dead money".
