****Official 2010 NFL Free Agency Thread****

Might as well try to keep it all in one place.

Put news of signings, cuts, etc. here to be discussed.

Maybe a mod will sticky this - I'll do my best to keep it updated.

Signings: Years/Amount/Guaranteed money

Nate Burleson - Detroit - 5 years/$25M/$11M

Gary Brackett - Indianapolis - 5 years/$33M/$12M

Brandon Manumaleuna - Chicago - ???

Chiefs Showing "Serious" Interest In NT Shaun Smith
by Joel Thorman on Mar 6, 2010

According to a league source, the Kansas City Chiefs are showing "serious" interest in free agent Shaun Smith, the 28 year old defensive tackle most recently of the Bengals.

Smith comes with experience in the 3-4 defense and a familiarity with a couple of key members of the Chiefs.

In 2003, Bill Parcells signed him as an undrafted free agent. He lasted a year in Dallas crossing paths with Todd Haley for just a short period of time. In 2007, he was signed by the Cleveland Browns who were coached at the time by -- you guessed it -- Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

We're told the interest in Smith is due in large part to the presence of Crennel. The Chiefs worked Smith out back in October without signing him to a contract.

Smith is listed at 6'2" and over 320 pounds, which is good size for a 3-4 nose tackle.

Our source believes a deal is on the horizon but we've yet to confirm. Smith's agent had not responded to our email request as of this posting.

There are definitely some moves KC could do to salvage this FA period. Add a player of Gaither's caliber so that you have some options at left and right tackle, sign a NT like Shaun Smith or Jamal Williams, add another veteran back that understands his role. You build through the draft, but if you can eliminate needs in FA, you can narrow down the scope in the draft.

Patience has nothing to do with it. Players want to play for a competitive team. If KC has another season like 09 or 08, the chances of aquiring players become less and less likely unless the player is only interested in $$$$$$.

Eventually, you have to stop saying "be patient" and put a winning product on the field. Otherwise games are blacked out, losing seasons pile up, and nobody wants to play for you.

They just said on NFLN that they talked to Pioli at the combine and that they expect to make moves to get PLAYMAKERS in the draft and not just typical linemen.

take it for what its worth, which is probably nothing. Just thought it was exciting to hear and thought I would pass it on for the people not watching or that dont have NFLN to start with...

And by competitive teams if you mean the ones who pay the most you would be right.

I'll never understand why this is such a difficult concept. The Lions convinced 2 players to come and play for them. Why? BECAUSE THEY OFFERED THE MOST. Agents know what players are going to get on the market, they do their research.

Disagree.

Neither took another visit.

VandenBosch wanted to play for Schawarz again, and Linehan stood on the table to get Burleson because of their time together in Minnesota.

Neither were going on another visit - they want to play in Detroit.

I know that sounds crazy to some people, but at least they are building towards SOMETHING. We're just spinning our wheels.

With Dunta's deal done, Falcons will trade Chris Houston
Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2010 8:14 PM ET
On Saturday, the Atlanta Falcons signed veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson to a free-agent deal. With Robinson under contract, they no longer need cornerback Chris Houston.

And so, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, they're trading Houston. To the Lions. For a sixth-round draft pick and a flip-flop of fifth-rounders.

It's a dramatic free fall for the second-round pick from Arkansas, who has started 37 regular-season games and every 2008 contest -- including a playoff loss to the Cardinals.

And you don't think their agent knew what would be the contract ceiling for those 2 before he signed? I have a hard time believing that Nate Burleson said prior to the start of free agency that he'd really love to be a Detroit Lion.

I just love this premise that the Lions are building something.

What are they building? They are doing the exact same thing defensively that the Chiefs did for about 5 years by signing older free agent and patching up the defense with underachieving players.

They have a QB, and a WR, that's about it.

Then what the **** are we building?

The Lions are WAY ahead of us right now, and both franchises had a regime change at the same time. They were in way worse shape than we were.

I'd be shocked if they don't make the playoffs before we do, and they play in a MUCH tougher division.

I'd take their players versus our players at almost every position on the field sans RB, LT, LG and CB. I'd absolutely take their HC over ours.

Oh, I forgot our spectacular kicking tandem.
