Designed properly an edgelit TV will have 95+% of the contrast as an equivalent backlit TV.

The theoretic advantage that backlit tv's have is that they have an array of LED that they can selectively turn off allowing finer grained contrast control. The disadvantage of backlit is that the TV will be thicker and heavier.

For edgelit, it is the newer technology mostly motivated to shrink the depth of a LED TV. However with the more advanced edge lit technology they can do much of the selective dimming that a backlit TV can with an array of LEDs. To do this they generally use a set of micro actuated mirrors to reflect the edge LEDs to the screen. This technology in my TV is called precision dimming. The disadvantage of this technology is that it's more expensive. BUT if you get an edge lit TV I would look for one with local or precision dimming.

Backlit arrays will be cheaper, but they'll be thicker and heavier. Edgelit with localized dimming will have similar contrast ratios but be a thinner TV.

here's some more background on the deal. for starters, UPS/Fed X LAUGHED at coming to our place in rural Arkansas. we're 3 miles from the closest mailbox on the high way!!

we don't care about uber sound systems, home theaters and the likes. DW works at the local walmart, 12 miles away, so she gets 10% off. she talked to a couple of the guys at work in the electronics dept. and they both recommended Samsung or Vizio over the Sony. I was really surprised!
I haven't had a chance to personally talk to them but I'll try to Saturday if I can get out. (the humidity lately royally SCREWS with my breathing.)

I have no problems with the $1300.00 price tag for the Sony. I read lots of REALLY BAD reps about the power supplies on the Samsungs crapping out.
I watch a LOT of TV since I can't get out when it's real hot or cold. I want something that will be trouble free and last.

Any more input?
TIA!!!

ETA: not ready to make the 3D jump yet.
