This is going to be worthless for some here no matter what is said or posted but here it goes

If Tatum wasn't properly contrite, it's because he understood the incident was a tragic accident. Referees threw no flags. The league issued no fine. Stingley's own coach, Chuck Fairbanks, conceded it was a clean hit.

Tatum tried to apologize the first time because of a book deal I believe. Nothing more than press to sell more books.

Tatum was a piece of shit. He never had any remorse for ending a guys career and putting him in a wheelchair for life. The world is a better place without that prick. Good riddance maggot.

The difference is exemplified by Raiders coach John Madden who was at the hospital with Stingley THAT NIGHT (or the next night, whatever), whereas Tatum, the guy who committed the act, never apologized or tried to meet with him until many many years later when he had a book coming out or whatever.

Many witnesses still claim it was Stingleys family that turned Jack away from teh hospital when he did show up.
IIRC it's in his book (i'd have to read it again) he did show up, and was turned back, and threatened by Stingleys family of the police being called if he didn't leave.

What happened, who knows, either way, bad accident, but shit happens.
How come Butkus don't get shit for "killing" a guy he hit who had a hart attack??

The book deal is the only real problem I have with Tatum, other than the fact that he was a dirty, cheatin' Raider.

But the fact is, he didn't break any rules on that hit on Stingly, and he wasn't the only player of that era to make those kinds of hits (Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, to name a Chief), and the only reason he's villified is because he did put Stingly in a wheelchair.

Thank you, but the fact of the matter Tate never play outside of the rule book. He had teammates that did but he played with in the rule book. He hit like no other and because of guys he played with and the hit on Stingley he got a bad rap. The hit on Stingley was clean and ironically was not even a hard hit. It happened 08/12/78 on my birthday and to this day I am stunned the kid did not get up. Jack showed poor form IMO on how he handled the situation. He did show up at the hospital to see Darrell but was cussed and told to f&ck off.

He should have understood the emotions of the situation and put that aside. He did not and felt he was hired to hit and that is what he did. The nickname was given to him before he ever played a down in the NFL and was not the nickname he had with the team. He should have reached out after feelings cooled and the whole book deal came off tacky. That said RIP Tate you were the hardest hitter pound for pound ever and 2nd place is distant.

It was just a run-of-the-mill tackle. Stingley put his head down just before contact & it collided with Tatum's chest. Nothing dirty, no blow to the head, no hitting from behind. Just a tragic accident. Look at the video.
