If Ngata gets tagged....

Would he be worth the first and third in addition to the contract he demands? Methinks yes. I mean, who are you going to get in those picks that can have such a tremendous impact immediately?

*wait for inevitable cry of those who don't want to spend all that money on the d-line...*

Report: Haloti Ngata to get franchise tag
Posted by Evan Silva on January 31, 2011, 7:29 PM EST
NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora reports that the Ravens “are expected” to use their franchise tag on impending free agent defensive tackle Haloti Ngata after Super Bowl XLV.

It’s the Ravens’ best option. While G.M. Ozzie Newsome intends to lock up Ngata long term, no movement in that regard will occur until a new collective bargaining agreement is finalized. This will be the case for many free agents around the NFL, so usage of the franchise tag may be especially popular this offseason.

La Canfora adds that the Ravens plan to meet with another impending free agent, offensive tackle Jared Gaither, about a potential contract on Wednesday.

Gaither didn’t play a single down in 2010 due to a thoracic disk injury in his back. His absence was considered to be one of the main reasons for Baltimore’s run-blocking struggles.

After averaging 4.70 yards per rushing attempt in 2009, the Ravens’ team average plummeted to 3.76 this season.

I have no idea what his personality is like, but it feels like another Haynesworth...or when any other DT not named Warren Sapp or John Randle gets paid huge money and gets lazy.

Team X tags you and keeps you from going to where you would like (yes they get paid a heap of cash, but still, kind of ****ed up).

I think I would like to see it removed altogether. More big name players would be in play for all teams to go after, and it means teams will have to be better with their money, and maybe they won't throw it down the toilet on 1st overall picks like JaBustus Russell.
I actually like the tag as it helps keep forming teams from being ripped apart. I'd be happy with the ability to match other teams offers, but there are too many teams pulling poisoned pills for that to work.

Ngata isn't in any way comparable to Haynesworth.

The guy has come to work since the day he was drafted.

This isn't a contract year star.

People say more dumb, uninformed shit at this time of the year than any other.

Ngata would transform this defense overnight.

I seriously doubt that Ozzy Newsome would let Ngata go elsewhere, unless the compensation was massive.

I'd give similar compensation to what we got for Allen right now.

Even though he has played LDE in Baltimore, he would make our DL dominant and would make our linebackers look much better from the nose.

I would go as high as a first and second MAX...at that point I'm a buyer.
