"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

I was prepared to let this slide, but I decided I need to put you in your place before you get used to calling people douche nozzles and thinking you can get away with it. What kind of person are you? Some type of 12 year old who just got on the computer for the first time a few nights ago? I bet you work a menial waiting job and don't even excel at rolling silverware, let alone providing a service to your customers.

Go back to fapping to pictures of your mother, your mind numbing insults can be found in a basic google search. You have nothing to add to this board, your and idiot. Your birth certificate was an apology from the condom factory. And my personal favorite (the skip insult) - you don't have enough posts on this board to have a viable opinion yet.

That was the very first clue from Moe that he was truly in over his head. Everytime we played the Padres and Greene came up, I know the rally was over if we just pumped him some high gas.

Moe not only traded for the man, but he absorded a $6 million contract and gave up a kid that turned out to be one of the best setup men in baseball in the process.

And I think I might prefer Mike Adams over Heath Bell, both in terms of cost ($ and prospects) and ability.

Screw that we don't need to give up Sanchez, rasmus or miller for a rent a reliever.

Crazy Coffey is good people. He's a long time fan of the Cardinals. There is some hazing on this site. You have to have a tough skin to survive. Just put this behind you and move on.

The Cardinal fans in here don't usually have arguments. Most if not all the fans in here are on the same page, have basically the same opinion on the lineup, Larusssa, Franklin etc. about the only thing we have disagreed on was the Pujols contract. We usually end up in here just venting and agreeing about some boneheaded Larussa line up or some bothed Mo trade.

Cardinals prospect Carlos Martinez was every bit as good as advertised in his U.S. debut on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced and struck out six over four hitless innings as the Quad Cities River Bandits blanked the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 1-0.

"It all came out like I had dreamed it would," Martinez said through a translator. "After the first inning, it was just, 'Wow.'

"I don't want to say I was nervous, but I was just trying to feel myself. It was very emotional."

A native of the Dominican Republic, Martinez was perfect for the Cardinals' Class A affiliate the first time through the order, fanning two batters in each of the opening three frames.

T.J. Mittelstaedt drew a one-out walk in the fourth to give the Timber Rattlers their first baserunner, but Martinez got Cody Hawn and Michael Walker to fly out to keep the game scoreless.

The 6-foot flamethrower threw 30 of 52 pitches for strikes before turning things over to the River Bandits bullpen.

"I still want to get better with my command, especially on my fastball," Martinez said. "I want to work really hard."

River Bandits manager Johnny Rodriguez said the non-drafted free agent already has the makeup to be a star.

"I've been in baseball more than 30 years and he could be a No. 1 guy in St. Louis," Rodriguez said. "He was better than I had expected.

"He reminds me of when I saw a young Pedro Martinez in Albuquerque in the early '90s. In fact, he shows me more than what Pedro did at his age, and you know how his career went."

The Cardinals signed Martinez last April and he promptly led the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League with a 0.76 ERA in 12 starts. He went 3-2 with 78 strikeouts over 59 innings.

Martinez, who reportedly received a $1.5 million signing bonus, impressed the Cardinals' front office during a mini-camp bullpen session in Jupiter, Fla., prior to the start of Spring Training in February.

The velocity and life of his fastball drew a lot of attention, but Rodriguez was equally impressed with his off-speed pitches Saturday.
"His fastball was thrown at 97 to 99 mph and it exploded off the plate, but his curveball fell right off the table," he said. "That was what was so impressive, the spin on his breaking ball and the action on his changeup.

"In the last four or five years, his curveball was the best I have seen from such a young arm. They had five or six left-handed hitters in their lineup and still had no chance of hitting him. His mound presence was off the charts and his command was perfect."

Southpaw Kevin Siegrist (4-1) tossed five shutout innings in relief of Martinez, losing the no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh when Chris Dennis singled to right field. Siegrist allowed one more hit, walked two and struck out two.
Oscar Taveras gave the River Bandits the lead with a one-out RBI single in the eighth. The slim lead held up as Quad Cities posted back-to-back wins for the first time in two weeks.
