VOLUNTEER IN PERSON - Volunteer efforts are being coordinated through Missouri Southern State University.
Many people have contacted the City of Joplin to volunteer assistance to the victims of the storm. ALL citizen volunteers should report to the Recreation Center at Missouri Southern State University. Volunteers’ services are appreciated, but to be effective, will need to be coordinated through this centralized location. Citizens are reminded that the American Red Cross, in cooperation with the City, has set up a shelter at Missouri Southern State University in the Leggett & Platt Center.

Here's some info I got from my work e-mail

Message relay from Troop F @ 2120 hours:

In reference to the SEMA Incident the command post is currently operational in the Troop D Joplin area. Due to an overwhelming number of Volunteers, SEMA officials are not currently requesting any further outside assistance until further notice.

Emergency blood drive this afternoon - Monday 5/23

The Greater Kansas City chapter of the American Red Cross will hold an emergency blood drive this afternoon to provide blood for those injured in the tornados over the weekend.

The blood drive will be from 2 to 7 p.m. in the Cass County Room at 211 W. Armour Blvd.

Meanwhile, the Community Blood Center is requesting area residents to donate blood this week to help support the rescue efforts in Joplin.

The blood bank has shipped 15 units of blood to the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. Local hospitals are performing surgeries on some of the victims and the need for blood will increase as the rescue efforts continue.

To find a mobile blood drive, go to www.safealifenow.org or call 1-888-647-4040. Donors can also go to one of Community Blood Center’s seven Neighborhood Donations Centers.

Misread the post. Somehow got the impression that the truckers screwed with the wbc folks vehicles and not their own. And, yeah, diesel engines have glowplugs but not sparkplugs. I should've caught that. Duh!

It's kind of interesting seeing all the rumors on Twitter. No one really knows for sure what happened with WBC, but the truckers story seems to be popping up quite a bit. Also stories seem to be common that one single protestor made it into town, but the crowd chased them off.

I'll post a few things I see just because I think it's interesting. Keep in mind that these are Twitter posts, so a healthy dose of skepticism is probably warranted.

Well, I'll admit this sounds at least a little more violent than I expected:

Quote:
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church scheduled a protest in Joplin, Mo., Sunday. One protestor arrived around 12:15 p.m. and was accosted by counter protestors. Police escorted the Westboro member to safety and used tear gas to control the crowd.

**** that shit. The Joplin police department has MUCH more pressing needs than attending protests. They should butt the **** out of that shit right now. This isn't some random funeral. This is mass mayhem going on everywhere. This is the time that WBC deserves exactly what it gets.

This is the guy who was apparently arrested for swinging at the truckers at the flying J.

http://twitter.com/#!/WBCSteve

But he is still tweeting... some people think someone else is using his account and that he did go to jail.

That would be cool. If he goes to jail, hopefully he gets raped.

I'm actually posting from my truck and I personally ran over 3 WBC members. Their entrails are mixed with diesel fuel and kitty litter under my tires. I've been offered a key to the city Joplin but really, what use is that now?

I keep hunting for credible sources about what happened, but it's tough to find. My guess about what SEEMS credible is that most of them never made it to Joplin due to the whole truck driver boxing them in thing. One guy seems to have made it there (probably arriving separately), but the crowd was having none of it, and he was quickly escorted away by the cops.
