How will you react if the NBA cancels its season?
http://aol.sportingnews.com/nba/stor...t-consequences
It doesn’t necessarily matter what NBA commissioner David Stern meant when he said on Wednesday that the upcoming weekend of negotiations between players and the league would determine “whether they can either have a season or not have a season.” Maybe it was a threat, as it sure seemed to be—a grand warning that if they did not accede to a deal, players would miss out on an entire year of salary. But the league is insisting it was not a threat, so maybe it wasn’t. It’s not really important, though, because we don’t need any pronouncements from Stern to notice that the pages are slipping away on the NBA’s calendar, and with both sides reporting on Wednesday that no progress had been made, at the very least, the beginning of the season is in jeopardy. The sides will meet again on Friday, and considering it will take about two weeks to iron out the details of a collective bargaining agreement, it’s clear that without significant movement this weekend, the season won’t start on time on Nov. 1. During the 1998 lockout, the league started canceling regular-season games on October 13, and that timeline should hold up this time around. Canceling the season is still an option, but it’s on the back-burner. There are some who believe that once some games are missed, owners will be willing to axe the whole season, as the NHL did in ’05. But bear in mind, losing an entire season would not just be a hit to the players. It would be a big hit to the owners, too. There is a provision in the league’s television contract that pays the league even in the event of lost games, something that surely increases the owners’ bargaining power in the early stages of a lockout. Owners will still be feeding from their deepest trough, while players miss paychecks. There is a catch, though—if the entire season is canceled, the owners will have to return the television money, plus interest. The threat of the season being canceled can be arrived at just by looking at the calendar and noting the lack of progress the two sides have made. But there would be no point to a preemptive canceling of the season on Stern’s part. SI.com’s Sam Amick reports that Stern has laid out a Jan. 7 drop-dead date for cancellation of the season. That was the same deadline in ’99, when a scattered and shortened 50-game season began on February 5—with very negative results. Attendance fell by 2.2 percent, television ratings fell sharply and NBA Finals ratings went from 18.7 to 11.3. That was largely because of the retirement of Michael Jordan and the breakup of the Bulls, but still, it took a long time for the NBA to recover its popularity. The league last season regained its relevance among fans. Players have a lot at stake in the case of a canceled season. But while owners might be in a better financial position to withstand a long lockout, they saw the NBA finally climb out of its post-Jordan doldrums, and they have a lot at stake here, too. A canceled season is still a possibility. But we’re a long way from that point. |

Yeah sounds like they would fit in well with the rest of my teams. Went to a game last year and the Blues lost in typical fashion.

Wouldn't really care, especially if it means that bitch Lebron would go ringless for another year.

Since I'm a Thunder season ticket holder I'd be pretty crushed. I was actually more excited for this than the NFL because the Thunder have a legitimate shot at something unlike the Chiefs. Hopefully, they'll get it worked out. As long as they start playing by January or so I'm good though. The regular season is too long anyway.
I really think the owners can't agree amongst themselves and Stern is throwing the players under the bus. Even if the players agreed I'm not sure the owners are on the same page at all. |

Fair enough. I've only made that drive once and it was 10 hours... but I had about 3 hours of torrential downpour during which I was slowed to 40-50 on the freeway... Figured it set me back an hour but I guess maybe it was two.

I would miss it, but I would get by because I like hockey and the NHL playoffs happen at the same time.

Both sides met today to try and settle.....still nothing, but sounds like they might be getting closer...
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_yl...ug=ap-nbalabor Top negotiators for the NBA and players’ association met Sunday night in perhaps the last chance to avoid canceled regular-season games. Commissioner David Stern has set Monday as the deadline for a new labor deal to be reached before the first two weeks of the season will be canceled. No meetings had been planned since he set the deadline Tuesday, before the sides agreed to talk Sunday. Stern, Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, owners Peter Holt of San Antonio and Glen Taylor of Minnesota, and senior vice president and deputy general counsel Dan Rube met with union executive director Billy Hunter, president Derek Fisher(notes) of the Lakers and vice president Maurice Evans(notes) of the Wizards, and attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Ron Klempner. The meeting comes two days after the union said the league insisted it accept a 50-50 split of revenues as a condition to meet. Instead, the precondition was dropped, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private. No talks had been expected after Friday’s developments, when the league said it had been willing to meet on other issues but confirmed it wouldn’t go beyond a 50-50 split. Union executive director Billy Hunter had planned to fly to Los Angeles on Monday for a regional meeting with members. That meeting is still planned. Fisher sent a letter to players, obtained by The Associated Press and other outlets, urging as many as possible to attend. “We find these meetings extremely productive and informative as we review the status and details of the CBA negotiations, answer questions and discuss next steps,” Fisher wrote. But travel plans could change if there is enough progress Sunday. Talks were still ongoing more than four hours after they began. Owners brought the idea of the 50-50 split to players on Tuesday, which they rejected. They were guaranteed 57 percent of basketball revenues in the previous collective bargaining agreement and have said they wouldn’t go below 53 percent in a new deal. Even if they were able to agree on the revenue split Sunday, the structure of the salary cap system hasn’t been worked out, and numerous other items haven’t even been touched because the two main issues have been so contested. The season is scheduled to open Nov. 1 |
