What If The QBOTF Isn't There?

1528290_f520_tiny by citadelchief on Nov 30, 2011 7:08 AM CST

From the FanPosts -Joel

As we begin to accept that the Kansas City Chiefs will probably miss the playoffs and will be drafting in the top 15 next year, there is a lot of talk about who the Chiefs should be taking...OK, we've already been talking about it for a couple months now. Obviously, the majority of Chiefs fans are looking at QB with the first pick, and rightfully so. Personally, I agree. I would love for KC to get Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, or Robert Griffin III.

However, I am a plan for the worst and hope for the best type of guy.

Star-divide
Looking ahead at the 2012 NFL Draft, I see some very worrisome possibilities in the Chiefs drafting the QBOTF with the first pick. It is a strong QB class with plenty of potential stars, journeymen starters, and quality backups. However, we have had our fill of journeymen and backups...we want our star. So, that limits our options to Luck, Barkley, and Griffin.

So what's the problem? There are several:

1. Indianapolis - The Colts have all but wrapped up the 1st overall pick, and with an aging Peyton Manning coming off of an injured neck, they would have to be crazy to pass over Andrew Luck.

2. Miami - Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. That's what everyone needs to be thinking when it comes to Matt Moore. The Dolphins would be nuts to put their future in his hands. The Panthers tried that, and now have Cam Newton...so the Dolphins will get Matt Barkley. Hmm, maybe the Chiefs should sign Matt Moore so we can get our QBOTF?

3. Washington - John Beck or Rex Grossman? Yeah, let's face it, the Skins will be going QB early this year. The good news here is that Landry Jones is rated higher than RGIII on some boards...so maybe the Chiefs dodge a bullet with that one.

4. Seattle - That bullet we just dodged? Yeah, it turned around and got us. Seattle gave up a 3rd rd pick for Charlie Whitehurst so they wouldn't have to draft a QB. They signed Tavaris Jackson so they wouldn't have to draft a QB. I really don't see this happening a 3rd time. Griffin just got snagged.

5. Arizona - Kevin Kolb failed miserably. There was some life with John Skelton, but that quickly fell apart as well. The Cardinals may be looking at a new coach and a new QB to go with him. If any of those top 3 are available, I just can't see them passing on that opportunity.

6. Philadelphia - What?! That's right, you heard me. Don't think for a second that the Eagles won't pull the trigger if the opportunity is there. Mike Vick started out great for them, but then he has steadily declined, just like he did in Atlanta. Vince Young has played well enough that he can probably get himself a pretty good opportunity somewhere else.

7. New York - Don't get it twisted, Mark Sanchez is playing for his future right now. Rex Ryan pulling him off the 1st team for a couple practices wasn't about him losing his job to Mark Brunell this year, it was about him losing his job to a new guy next season. Sanchez isn't down and out yet, but if the Jets don't make the playoffs? Well, Sanchez might want to warm up his clipboard arm.

So there it is. My list of concerns. And this doesn't include the teams like Chicago, Denver, and New Orleans who will be in the market for backups and future projects.

Now, the Chiefs do have the option to trade up. The Jets did it for Sanchez and the Falcons did it for Jones...but are the Chiefs in the same place as either of those teams? I look at the roster, and it sure doesn't appear that way. I'm not against a trade up, but I can't say I'm thrilled about the idea.

To Landry's defense though, I didn't see him pull the infamous Cassel-crappage when he was under pressure.
Here's the deal with Landry - he looks the part. Good size, pocket passer and he has a really good arm. But, and I don't know if it is because of his mental makeup, or conservative coaching, or a combo of both - he doesn't trust or have confidence in his arm. He doesn't try to fit the ball in tight places. He doesn't look as smooth as Barkley or Griffin under pressure.

Kyle ****ing Orton is now the best QB on our roster.

How the **** could we NOT have a better option at QB on the board when we pick?...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The Chiefs need to stop being a scared organization. The safe choice isn't going to work for us.

Totally agree with that. I see so many fans saying we need more depth. Well, that is true but if we had a good QB, it would certainly make up for the lack of depth in our offense.

As for the defense, we lack depth at certain positions but as we`ve seen this year, it`s really not that bad overall as our defense without Berry has played good despite being on the field all the time.

When healthy and with a good QB this team would look really good. Of course if Houston doesn't keep progressing we will need more pass rush, as well as a NT of the future and a RT, but overall its looking pretty damn good with a QB.

With the money we have and draft, fixing the QB gives us a much clearer picture of what we need to fix. Not to mention how much better an offense looks with a good QB. With Cassel, we need the rest of our offense to be great. With a good QB, you don't need a top 3 oline and top 3 set of weapons, even though with a new RT, we look pretty good with both.

Even with Berry out, little pass rush outside of Hali, and only an aged Gregg, our D looks pretty damn good. Just having a solid O with that makes the D better with no other changes.

Even if thats the case, teams behind us will be. Whats more likely to happen....MIA or WAS trading up or us doing so? Unless we finish 2nd or 3rd in the draft there are multiple reasons why a QB won't be there for us.

The only reason there's no QB available to us is because we refuse to trade up. That's it.

That could very well be true. Do you doubt that we would refuse to trade up?

I'm clinging to the fact that since Pioli has been here there hasn't been a qb that he really likes so he hasn't drafted one high. This year is gonna be different.

I don't think its unreasonable to think that. Reality is in NE he never really had to look for a QB since they lucked into Brady. If you say alright Pioli believed in Cassel but isn't a complete moron, this would be the season he would have to take a QB.

I am still giving him the benifit of the doubt with the roster ect, this offseason is the line though. If he doesn't get a QB and address the other 3 spots we need I am going to offically give up. Hell, if he just gets a QB I will be fine with it. I just can't believe 100% he will get a QB because I can't take the heartbreak if I am expecting it to come.

I pray that Pioli's expectations in the draft aren't too far from ours. I'd admire him if he moves up to get his QB and help me understand why he was one of the masterminds at NE. On the other hand, pure devastation if he doesn't. This is one of the biggest and exciting draft of finally landing our QBOTF and to really see if this organization wants to head anywhere.
