Is it common to hire a new HC during the season...

In other words

Is it realistic for teams like Chiefs, Dolphins, and Jags to hire new coaches outside of their respected franchise before the end of the season?

I've always liked Fisher, and it's a little strange to see how many people are really opposed to him. Whether he's the best out there I don't know, but I have a hard time believing he'd be worse than any of the college coaches I keep hearing mention of. With a few exceptions his teams were usually pretty competitive from I remember. If our next coach has to be a good one then he's not a bad place to start.
