How many starting QB's has KC had since the Chiefs won a playoff game?

I don't know what makes me ask these masochistic questions. In this case a friend of mine asked me and I researched it. I thought it was worth sharing here. It took me a bit of time to compile this list. The answer is 13. Somehow that seems like an appropriate number considering all the bad luck we've had since our last playoff win.

As of this coming Sunday, Chiefs will have played 296 consecutive games without a playoff victory, the last one being January 16, 1994. This list contains starters from January 23, 1994 on.

The list below is in chronological order of the player's first start. Players that subbed in the middle of a game don't count (i.e. no Todd Collins), this is a list of players that actually started a game.

Dave Krieg - 1 game (1993 playoffs, subbed for an injured Montana)

Joe Montana - 15 games, all in the 1994 season. Could never stay healthy with KC. But Joe was our QB when we won our last playoff game, so it's really hard not to like the guy.

Steve Bono - 32 games. Seeing that number makes me kind of sad, really. I can't remember anyone in KC ever really liking Bono or thinking he was the long term answer. He was always viewed by everyone I knew as a means to an end, a "game manager" type (if ever there was a greater insult to a QB). No wonder we were such fans of the Chiefs defense in the 1990s.

Rich Gannon - 19 games. One wonders what would have been different in KC if we treated him right. If only Marty had benched Steve Bono earlier during the infamous "he who shall not be named" game.

Elvis Grbac - 48 games. I warmed up to this guy towards the end, but maybe I was delusional. My recollection of Elvis was that he didn't totally suck, but that's not saying much.

Warren Moon - 1 game (week 12, 2000). Warren was really on borrowed time when he was with the Chiefs. This was his only start.

Trent Green - 90 games (including a streak of 82 consecutive starts). Trent was a great QB for a while. He had a rough start, but I really liked him. Trent is probably the closest thing we have had to a "franchise QB" other than Montana in the past 20 years. For five seasons from 2001-2005 we had one of the best offenses in the league. Damn shame the defense sucked during most of those years.

Damon Huard - 21 games. To be honest, it kind of hurts seeing this. Damon was a surprisingly good replacement when Trent went down, but I never expected him to be the long term answer. Still, starting 21 games. Wow.

Brodie Croyle - 10 games. Poor guy never won a game in his career. I had high hopes for Brodie, but he could never stay healthy. As if you didn't already know, I'd like to direct your attention to the fact that Brodie Croyle is the only Chief on this list that we drafted.

Tyler Thigpen - 11 games. I'm almost in disbelief at this. He really started 11 games as a Chief.

Matt Cassel - 40 games. I'm not exactly sold on Matt, but I have to admit that I'm surprised he has actually started 40 games as a Chief. I had to check my math on this one. One last note here, if you aren't sure whether a QB is any good after 40 starts, maybe you are in denial.

Tyler Palko - 4 games. Say no more. Moving on...

Kyle Orton - 3 games (including the game this upcoming weekend). Kyle is a damn sight better than Palko, and I dare say the equal if not better than Cassel. A big part of me hopes we find a true "QBOTF" and that this number doesn't go much higher than 3 starts as a Chief.

Hope that you found this as interesting as I did.

I'm still pissed that we kept Grbac instead of Gannon.

In that time, the Patriots have had two: Drew Bledsoe, and Tom Brady.

26 playoff games. 9 losses, 17 wins, 5 SB appearances with 3 SB victories.
Two and a half years later. Apparently the act of being a Pats fan doesn't imbue one with foresight.

Not nearly as bad as your defense.

That leaves 118 games by abominations, most of which occurred after Green was brutally attacked without penalty.

Looking at this, the big failure was the failure to replace Green. While we didn't always have all-star QBs before him, we often had passable QBs. (And before anyone goes off on me, I recognize that we need a franchise QB to win. I'm just saying that the biggest debacle has taken place post-Trent Green.)
Moon was a complete brokedick by the time he started for us, and it showed, losing to a 1-15 team, and Green post-Geathers, was washed up.

Between Gannon and Grbac the right move was to dump both of them. Chuckie's Dink and Dunk Extravaganza is the only offense in the NFL that Gannon could have thrived in. If we would have kept him we would not have had success with him. I regret a lot of things about the Cheifs, but getting rid of that loser isn't one of them.

Good god these numbers really make you take a second look at the coaching history in KC too. To think that each "QB" on this horrid list started nearly twice the games of Gannon. What the hell were our "talent" evaluators looking at precisely. Depressing. Good grief this organization is/has been a bleeding anus when it comes to QB evaluation.

Elvis Grbac - 48 games
Steve Bono - 32 games
Matt Cassel - 40 games

Rich Gannon - 19 games

I totally agree. I guess everyone loves to armchair quarterback (or armchair general manage) their favorite team, but I remember when Trent went down thinking "Jeez, even if Trent recovers his days are really numbered. The guy isn't getting any younger and we have nobody waiting in the wings".

It was about that time that I thought the Chiefs should go after Drew Brees when he was available. I thought that a bold move like that would be just what the franchise needed, even though I knew they never would have done it.

But I guess that and a nickle will get you a cup of coffee.
