CHIEFS NOTEBOOK

http://www.kansascity.com/2012/08/22...will-play.html

Dwayne Bowe to play Friday against Seahawks
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
Three days of practice were all that wide receiver Dwayne Bowe needed to get ready to play in a game. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said that Bowe would get some snaps in Friday night’s preseason game against Seattle at Arrowhead Stadium.

“Coach said I’m ready from what they’ve been looking at, and I’m going to play until they tell me not to,’’ Bowe said.

That point may come early in Friday’s game.

“I will play him some, just give him a couple of plays here and there, but I don’t think he’s ready to play a whole game or anything like that,’’ Crennel said.

Still, it’s a speedy turnaround for Bowe, who signed with the Chiefs only last Friday. As the unsigned franchise player, Bowe missed all the offseason practice and all of training camp in St. Joseph.

Judging from his comments, Bowe should be in midseason form. Asked what he wanted out of Friday’s game, Bowe said, “To continue where I left off: Being dominant, catching the ball, finishing, blocking downfield and helping this team win.’’

Lewis returns to practice

Injured safety Kendrick Lewis returned to practice, though just as an observer. Lewis stood on the sideline mostly chatting with other defensive backs, and his arm was no longer in a sling as it was in the locker room after Saturday night’s game in St. Louis.

Injured players usually don’t come to practice if they will be out of action for a long period of time, so Lewis’ attendance at practice could be taken as a positive sign.

Lewis injured his shoulder against the Rams. He injured the same shoulder in the final regular-season game last year and had surgery that kept him from participating in offseason practice.

Quinn or Stanzi as No. 2 QB?

Crennel wouldn’t say whether Brady Quinn or Ricky Stanzi would be the first quarterback off the bench in replacing Matt Cassel against the Seahawks.

“I’m not sure yet,’’ Crennel said. “We’ll have to see. We’re talking about that. We’ll wait until game time to figure that one out.”

The two seemed to separate themselves in the game against the Rams. Stanzi was sacked four times, threw an interception and lost a fumble, while Quinn completed five of his six passes for 70 yards and a 38-yard touchdown to Jeremy Horne.

“They both have been close,’’ Crennel said. “We wanted to see what the competition was. The circumstance for both of them has been just a little different in the games with who they’ve been with and things like that. I’m not ready to say one or the other right now. After this last game, I said I’d go through this week and then see what it looked like. We’ll be through this week here pretty soon and then we’ll be at the game and then maybe we’ll know.’’

Shaun Smith is available

Defensive lineman Shaun Smith, who became a fan favorite during the 2010 season with the Chiefs, became a free agent when he was released by the Tennessee Titans. Smith not only played for Crennel while he was defensive coordinator with the Chiefs but also in Cleveland while Crennel was head coach.

“Shaun is my man,’’ Crennel said. “Shaun would love to be here, I’m sure. But we’ve got some guys on the team right now (and) they’ve worked pretty (hard) and we feel decent about them, and then we’ll have to kind of look at it and see. I have not talked to Shaun yet, but Shaun might give me a call here shortly.’’

I hope the last spot goes to Powe. We don't know what he can be yet.
Pitoitua and Gordon have been around the league for a while.
they kept 8 on last years team so why wouldnt Romeo do the same this year?

last years was

Dorsey, Jackson, Bailey, Gilberry, Gordon, Bair, Powe and Gregg

Because of how banged up the secondary has been.

because safety and corner are a bigger need

How can you rely on a safety with a bump shoulder?

Now i realize that Lewis is such a shitty tackler that he may never hit that shoulder again, but still.

our starting safety can't cover, can't tackle and has a bum shoulder.

I would think that adding a FS would be something they are looking at during cuts.

same for cornerback ... if they were planning on Reeves doing something this year then they might want to look for another guy.

They are in desperate need for a safety, backup OL and LB.

Other than Allen to plug in at the guard position if something happens to either T or C, KC is screwed royally.

You guys are looking at this completely wrong. Smith isn't a backup DE. He's a backup DE, a backup NT, and possibly our starting fullback.

Ok...so out of the following players....who are you cutting to make room for him?

Dorsey, Jackson, Toribio, Bailey, Pitoitua, Powe and Poe.

And keep in mind, you need to cut TWO of the above. The inference by saying that he's a "backup DE and a backup NT" both is that he can replace TWO players, not one.

You could cut Pitoitua. They won't because of draft position, but so far Bailey hasn't overly impressed.

not really ... it's saying that he can be a backup at EITHER position, not necessarily both.

although after looking at the numbers i think it's more likely that we go with an extra secondary guy instead.

Maybe after the season starts and our secondary gets healthy we can switch to Smith. Then he wouldn't be guaranteed a full year's salary either. Totally depends on the situation in the secondary though.

I would rather have Pitoitua on this team over Smith.

It goes further than that. The decision to keep a fullback, or an 8th offensive lineman. or three tight ends.

Fixed. I removed Horne and O'Connell. That gives you one open spot that you can add another Offensive Lineman or another defensive back.

i fully expect us to keep 3 tightends

don't see a fullback worth keeping though

fullback needs to be able to read the open hole AND be athletic enough make the block

we don't have one of those
