I won't comment on the legality of it because I really don't know, but it might be worth checking what you are able to do if you find it has some sort of negative affect on you or your credit.

Damn, I read this four times and wondered WTF you were talking about. Am I the only one that didn't read "Let's say?

I don't know how it would be illegal for someone to do it, but I would think they would tape a sign or somethign with your name on it saying "Please contact management" or something such as that.

Last time I went in to get a new one at the SS office they told me there's a lifetime limit of 3 times which copies can be made.

Of course the clerk couldn't give me a reason, so I have none to tell.

You might have a civil claim in small claims to cover costs incurred for identity theft.

Stupid on the part of the business owner, but the true negligence is losing the SS card in the first place. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I don't know about the legality ... there may very well be a problem there.

If it had been my SS Card, though, that merchant had better be praying to God that I didn't suffer any problems with my credit either now or in the future. I would be on his dumb ass like Romeo on an egg roll. That was a very stupid move on his part.

Didn't intend to say criminal. But small claims max amount in MO is like $6K or something. Would be pretty easy to exceed small claims.
