Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

you know what the fatal flaw of our Vermeil squads were?

once we lost that lead in the 4th quarter and couldn't lean on our run game anymore...Trent never won us any games.

2004 is a prime example...if I remember right we held the lead in 14 of our 16 games in the 4th quarter and every time our defense failed us (and they always did) Trent would get that one final shot and once the defense didn't have to worry about the potent running game our line suddenly was beatable and Trent couldn't get it done.

and that was when we had built our line the true fan way with 3 perennial pro bowlers, 2 hall of famers, and an above average system center

in today's NFL even that wouldn't fly...it's all about the QB and playmakers

you can find lineman all over the draft...line play is just as much about chemistry and intelligence as it is actual skill.

Millen gets a ton of shit for being such a shit GM but at least he went QB, playmaker, playmaker, playmaker when he drafted Harrington, Rogers, Williams and Johnson.

at least he had the right idea

Defensive linemen aren't playmakers? I'd say in the modern NFL them and pass-rushing LBs are probably the single most important position aside from the QB. Just because this franchise has been terrible at drafting them doesn't mean that the general idea is bad.

Fun fact: more 2nd-6th round QB's have won the Super Bowl in the last 25 years than QB's picked 1st overall.

And there's another let's throw the DV offense under the bus post. From Hootie of all people. Holy fishstick on a crutch. I need to become a mod so I can exterminate everyone who makes that argument. Ban hammer. No excuses.

nah **** it

Suh was a 'once in a generation' talent and he has arguably less of an impact than Fairley.

Yeah JJ Watt is awesome...you show me JJ Watt and then I might be ok with him at #1 overall this year.

look...in the 34...I don't give a shit about DL anymore. It didn't work the first two times...excuse me for not wanting to see it happen a third time.

if there is truly no QB worth #1 then we better ****ing take a WR, CB or rush linebacker. Anything else will be ****ing worthless.

Almost as stupid as saying a QB picked 34th overall can't make the Super Bowl, especially seeing how Drew Brees and Colin Kaepernick have done just that in the last 5 years.

I loved Vermeil and I thought he was an awesome coach. Fantastic.

Our offense was great year in and year out...I loved it. Eddie Kennison was underrated.

but you disagree? Trent had a ton of opportunities in 2004 and I used to remember thinking on those final drives we were ****ed. And we usually were.

We either led 14 or 15 games in the 4th quarter that year and won 7 games. I realize our defense was a disaster but our #1 offense had plenty of chances to win games and couldn't once we had to abandon our running game.

2005 still eats at me because I think we could have went on a run if we got into the playoffs...

that Dallas game will forever hurt to think about it...one of my worst memories as a Chiefs fan...the Surtain dropped pick 6...the LJ block and whiff that led to a 14 point swing...the Tynes miss that would have forced OT...we'd win that game 19 times out of 20 and the 1 time we managed to lose it it ****ed us right out of the playoffs...

we would have won a playoff game that year

CB? At 1? This place's fascination with the CB position is amazing. And completely stupid. Anybody who drafts a CB with the #1 draft pick needs to be removed from their position immediately. It is literally the least important important position on the field in the modern NFL. I hope above anything Andy Reid learned that lesson from his last few years in Philly.

I'd rather have Patrick Patterson than Tyson Jackson.

PLAYMAKERS

we've invested 3 high 1st round picks on our DL and they all ****ing suck...

I want a FOOTBALL PLAYER at #1...we're just fine at OL and DL. We don't ****ing need to spend anymore picks on those positions this year.

we need a QB and then a shit ton of speed and playmakers. We don't need any more trench players this year.

Milliner = Sandcastle?

**** that.

I wouldnt draft Deion Sanders himself over a quarterback with the tools it takes to be a franchise quarterback...especially with a head coach like Andy Reid.

with them going after Canty and trying to restructure Jackson, it seems they may agree with you.

I hope they do.

No it's really not. Look dude, I get it. You don't like Geno. Thats fine. But you backtracking on what you said a month ago and justifying any player at 1 other than him is getting pretty old.

Every QB that has been brought up, other than Smith, you are ok with.

You think Mayock was right about Geno, but you think he was wrong about not having Wilson in his top 5. He actually likes Landry Jones more than Wilson. You probably think thats bullshit and would likely say opposite on here.

Yet if you do, people don't call you out on it etc, like you do when people say positive things about Geno.

This franchise hasn't drafted a QB in the first round in 30 years. We have the first overall pick and have no excuse not to take a QB and alot of guys on here are excited and really like the top rated QB. You seem to take a huge offense to that.

Now, yeah, most of them go over board when talking about Smith. But with what the franchise has put us thru in terms of QB's, who gives a shit? Let them have their fun if they want, I'd say it's deserved.
