What pass rusher should we take at 1/1 and how is this individual getting on the field?

If we want a pass rusher who will immediately have a spot, it would have to be Shariff Floyd or Sheldon Richardson.

Richardson isn't playing in a 3-4. Neither is Floyd.

Actually, IIRC, thats what they are projected as. 34 DE's.

I don't know, I'm just telling you what everyone is projecting him as. You'll have to refer to Sorter on that as I'm not extremely skilled in those spots.

I disagree entirely.

He'll never be an elite run stopper playing the 4/5 tech but that's irrelevant with the way the NFL is changing. "Nickel" fronts aren't 1-down fronts anymore, they're typically 2 down. A run stopping ILB is a 1-down player nowadays whereas an ILB who can cover is 2 down player at minimum and depending on the team playing/gameplan, probably 3.

Richardson is great at getting upfield from the 3 tech, which given the way the NFL is, that's where he'll not only get a majority of his snaps but also where he'll be expected to produce the most.

I agree with the bold, but Richardson doesn't play "big" enough to fill a role like Watt.

see I agree it would be a luxury pick and we'd have to hybrid up our defense a bit...

but at least a Von Miller would be worth the #1 pick in today's NFL

Luke Joeckel is not.

If we're going to have the #1 pick we need to use it on something that is worth the #1 pick like a QB, or a rush backer, or a freakishly talented WR.

if there is no Von Miller or Percy Harvin or Calvin Johnson or Deion Sanders in this draft then just take ****ing Geno Smith and if he ends up sucking I know I personally won't hold it against this regime. Not one bit.

If you were telling me that there was no way I could take Geno, Wilson, Barkley Nassib, or FFS, even Glennon and I had to take someone from another position, I'm probably going with Sheldon Richardson. He'll be on the field at DE, playing the 4/5 tech in base fronts and the 3 tech in subs primarily. I'd also consider Floyd, Moore, and Jordan.

No offense, but I don't understand what's wrong with all you guys tonight.

My argument with Hootie was if it was between a defensive lineman and a CB at 1, I'd take the defensive lineman, provided he provided pass-rush ability.

I stand by that statement.

I do not advocate taking either position to be quite honest. But if those are my two choices, I would rather add a third pass rusher over a CB.

I have no idea why this is typed like a Hootie post.

OK, in a vacuum I would agree. I'm taking a pass rusher over a CB We're philosophically aligned.

But I don't think a player like Watt is in this draft. He sure as hell isn't Sheldon Richardson, I know that much.

Exactly.

In a perfect world, sure you'd take a pass rushing DE over a corner.

This isn't a perfect world, this is the 2013 ****ing draft.

In our defense a 3rd pass rusher is a LINEBACKER.

And it's us that are being dense.
