Because the Chiefs don't want to pay him like a top 5 tackle. That's why.

They are comfortable negotiating at a set price now but if he hits FA, they are comfortable letting the market set a price.

This is the 3rd consecutive year Alex Smith was available.

In a league where 1/3 of the teams need a QB, and another 1/3 of the teams would probably like to upgrade the position, Alex Smith hits the market 3 years in a row.

It has to be a trade back, even if the "value" doesn't add up.

Even if they don't re-sign Albert, there will be several competent left tackles on the market. Spending the #1 overall on a tackle would be a waste.

Other than that, a trade back would allow them to target WR and TE, two areas that are sorely lacking, with their first two or three picks.

If they get Alex Smith and draft Joeckel, the culture hasn't changed. So people need to stop trying to get us to buy into that line of bullshit.

Remember when Dorsey said there is no clear cut qb. He meant that he would be getting a veteran qb in Alex Smith. Now Tj Carpenter of 810 sports is saying reid really really likes Geno. Put two and two together.
