The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

I think the Chiefs should take the BPA regardless of who that is or trade out of the pick if possible.

Sorry peeps. I guess all I'm saying is that not taking a QB in the first round for 30 years doesn't mean that taking a QB in the first round isn't necessarily a great idea.

He just needs to be worth it (and maybe Reid and company think he is...who knows).

The Niners have done it a few times......Alex Smith. Jim Druckenmiller. It doesn't always work out the way you want.

Joe Montana was a 3rd rounder. Steve Young was a trade. Kaep is a second rounder. Look...if the right guy is there in round one...you take him...no question. It just seems like people just really WANT Geno to be worth that pick.

I like the kid. I think he's first round talent. I think he'd be a good QB for Reid to get his hands on. I'm just not sure you want to take him #1 overall.
And what we're saying is that taking yet another retread QB doesn't work either. You do realize that if we take Alex Smith, he will be our 5th...yes, FIFTH SF retread QB, right?

How well has that worked out for us? How well did Rich Gannon, or Matt Cassel work out for us? How many playoff games did they win?

So you don't have to look...the answer is ZERO.

You know how many first round QB's have worked out for us? ZERO. Why? Because we've only attempted that strategy ONCE IN 30 YEARS.

AGAIN...

I'm not advocating trading for Smith. I waded back into this conversation only because I thought reaching for a QB at #1 was a bad idea. The Niners did that once...WITH ALEX SMITH.

I think Geno is a first round QB...I just don't think 1st overall. MOST people outside of KC would agree with that statement.

Failing that...if nobody is head and shoulders above him then you have a point. There are a few guys up there tho that I'd much rather have.
Who?

Luke Joeckel/Eric Fisher? The Chiefs don't need a tackle unless they stupidly let Brandon Albert walk.

Star Lotulelei? Heart condition renders any chance of this hopeless.

Bjoern Werner? The guy would be the 6th/7th best DE in most drafts.

Jarvis Jones? Spinal stenosis has taken him completely OFF most draft boards. Also is an OLB/pass rusher, a position the Chiefs have excellent players at (and a position that can be found in later rounds, too). He's not a once-in-a-lifetime OLB.

Dee Milliner? Solid corner, not a star corner.

Chance Warmack? At the end of the day, still a guard. I wouldn't take Will Shields with the first overall pick. Talk about a reach...

My "opinion" is that Geno at #1 is a mistake. You are free to disagree but making it out like I've been "proven wrong" is ludicrous.

Seriously...get over yourself.
The other thing you're missing here is that even if he is a mistake, it's a mistake we can all live with. Most Geno fans agree that he is worth the #1 overall pick, but very few are saying is is a sure thing HOF, Super Bowl winning QB.

This team, right now, needs to take the chance. I mean this thread is over 2,000 posts, this has been said, but we need to take a QB. If he doesn't pan out, fine, take another one. This risk averse bullshit has to stop, this year.

In a normal draft, that's probably true (though, really, if you compare him as a player to Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Matt Ryan, it's a favorable comp. Hell, I'd rather have Geno Smith than Matt Stafford).

People are comparing Smith to a normal draft class and not putting him in the proper context of THIS draft class.

Geno Smith is this draft's Tim Lincecum. Hopefully the KC franchise makes the correct pick this time.

If he's a 1st round QB, then he's worth the 1st overall.

There is a long list of 1st round QB's that had a ton of success that weren't considered "1st overall".

I don't care about 1st overall. I care about grabbing the most talented QB available.
