Trade Official: QB Alex Smith to #Chiefs confirmed

Reid Ferrin ‏@KCChiefs_Reid

Trade Official: QB Alex Smith to #Chiefs confirmed. Stay tuned to http://KCchiefs.com for more info #chiefskingdom

Adam Teicher ‏@adamteicher

The Alex Smith to #Chiefs trade is now official. 49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will acquire an undisclosed 2013 draft choice, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, in return for sending QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Smith must pass a physical in Kansas City for the trade to be executed.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Originally the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Smith spent eight seasons in the red and gold. During his tenure with the 49ers, he started 75 of the 80 games in which he played, completing 1,290 of 2,177 pass attempts (59.3%) for 14,280 yards and 81 TDs.

In 2012, Smith was 6-2-1 as a starter, completing 153 of 218 pass attempts (70.2%) for 1,737 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs, and a QB rating of 104.1. In 2011, Smith led the 49ers to their first NFC West title and postseason berth since 2002. He threw for a career-high 3,144 yards on 273 of 445 pass attempts with 17 TDs, 5 INTs and a 90.7 QB rating.

Born in Seattle, WA, Smith attended Helix High School in LaMesa, CA. At the University of Utah, Smith boasted a 21-1 record as a starter and became the first player in school history to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

I don't really care about his first few years in the league and I don't think they represent what he is now as a player. I think his last three years are a better indicator of what kind of player he is. I by no means think he's great or a long term answer for our QB position but I do think if he puts up a 95 plus QB rating this year we'll win alot of games and probably make the playoffs. We might win a playoff game too.
Pretty much where I'm at...

Of course I wanted Geno and wasn't happy with what we gave up but I'm excited to see what Pederson and Reid are able to do with Smith...not to mention we're surrounding him with playmakers. I'll probably be killed for this and called delusional, blah blah blah but I personally think Smith is going to have a really good year. Dude is coming here with a chip on his shoulder, like Reid, I love that.

People making the Brees comparison have lost their minds. Anybody who thinks Alex Smith is coming here and throwing for 5K repeatedly should not be allowed to procreate.

A guy who has never had a 20+ TD season is going to be Drew Brees v2.0?

Absolutely.....especially Considering Alex Smith will never EVER even have a season as good as Trint's best season......

The best we can hope for Alex (and it's asking a lot) is for him to have numbers comparable to Bree's last season in SD.

3576 yards
24 TDs
15 INTs
64.6% completion

That comes out to 223 yards, 1.5 TDs and .9 INTs per game.

Not so much a player comparison on a numbers level more to do with the situation. People say Alex Smith is Cassel 2.0 another back up QB and that's not accurate. He was a starter in college and every year he's been in the NFL. Kinda like Brees. He's also gotten better every year. We traded for him like we did Trent Green who would have been the starter in St Louis if not for Rodney Harrison. He was like a #2 starter more then a back up. Anyway Smith is kind of a combination of those things. I certainly don't think anyone believes that Alex Smith can put up Drew Brees like numbers. He could put up Trent Green type numbers though.

Edit:And he has won a playoff game which is something the Chiefs haven't had on their roster since Montana.

Alex Smith isn't throwing for 4.5k yards. Just isn't happening.

2003 numbers. 24 TDs and 12 INTs. He can match that and maybe with less INTs. He probably won't pass for 4000 yards though but he can match a 92.6 rating. If Reid and Smith mesh and our O line plays decent I could see Alex Smith with over 3000 yards and more importantly the 24 TDs and say about 10 INTs. If he stays healthy.

Trint went over 4000 at least 3 times, and over 4500 once IIRC

I'm talking more about TDs/INTs and rating not raw yards.

Edit: and completion %.
