Chiefs trying to trade Matt Cassel, may cut him today if they can’t

Chiefs trying to trade Matt Cassel, may cut him today if they can’t
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2013, 12:12 PM EDT
Matt Cassel AP

Matt Cassel won’t be a Chief for much longer, but the question in Kansas City is whether the team can get anything for the quarterback.

NFL Network reports that the Chiefs are trying to trade Cassel, who became expendable when the Chiefs formally acquired Alex Smith in a trade with the 49ers. As we noted yesterday, the Vikings, Buccaneers and Cardinals have all shown some interest in Cassel, and it’s possible that one of them would give up a late-round pick to acquire him.

Of course, no team would be willing to give up anything for Cassel unless they first work out an agreement to dramatically reduce the $7.5 million base salary on the contract that the Chiefs signed him to when they decided to overpay him after one good year with the Patriots. And the teams interested in Cassel may just figure they can hold off on offering anything for him in a trade because he’ll become a free agent at some point this offseason, as the Chiefs are obviously going to cut him.

So, while Andy Reid was a master at trading backup quarterbacks in Philadelphia, he probably won’t be able to repeat that feat in Kansas City.

And, according to NFL Network, if the Chiefs don’t find any takers in a trade, they could cut him as soon as today.

Ha, be sure to mention 27-7 a lot against a very tough schedule along with all the changing OCs.

I trolled the Baltimore Sun board way back in the day when they signed Girlbac.

Some points we need to pound home...

Weis was his only good coach
His receivers dropped everything and caused most of his interceptions
He throws a good deep ball
His pocket awareness is good
He is a great leader that teammates respect
He always accepts blame for losses and deflects praise for wins
He saved a bunch of kids from a burning house
Pro bowl needs to be said a lot
His offensive line was crap

It will only be effective if we all back each other up on these points...

GO Chiefs -

Cassel is a good QB. Chiefs never supported him properly. When we had good coaching he was awesome in 2010. I think he could go to a Pro Bowl with Peterson running the ball and your decent stable of WRs.

Very smart guy, can avoid turnovers, can REALLY throw a nice deep ball.

Well trolled sir, well trolled...

I think you're forgetting how hard he works and that he never stops working and if things need to get better he'll keep working hard and work harder than the other guys...cause he's a worker who works hard.

Throws a great screen pass and is great on his drops/ensuring effective depth
Will consistently go through his progressions when given enough time
Is mobile enough to scramble if needed
Is extremely awesome in regards to anything relating to hats
Hates ocelots.
