Then why make the Smith trade?

Keep 1.1 take whatever QB you want and keep Albert at LT.

Shrugs. I dont know. Clearly, either Albert they dont think can stand up physically for another 4 years, or, clearly they dont like geno smith, and figure they can get a qb they like more in the second round that can sit for a while?

Thats the only reason in the world i could of seen them trading for alex smith. If last years draft class, was this year, there is no way they trade for alex smith, they take andrew luck and laugh.

They take Alex Smith because there wasn't a single QB on the roster that was worth a damn. As well, the free agency QB's weren't going to get you anything other than middling journeyman types of guys.

Trading for Alex Smith is the exact same thing as signing Dunta Robinson for the free safety position or Shaun Smith for CB. Or franchising Branden Albert. They could have had Dee Milliner in the draft. They could have had Joeckel in the draft. They could have had Geno Smith in the draft. But the proven bird in hand is better than potential when you want to win now.

IMO, there is still a real possibility that Geno Smith is the pick. Alex Smith is 29 years old and coming off a concussion. He's also only put up two respectible seasons in his career. However, he was the best option that Dorsey and Reid had in making sure that they had a decent player at the QB position going into the 2013 season.

However, as stated, Geno Smith is just as likely the pick for the Chiefs as Joeckel/Fisher or a guy like Dion Jordan or Barkevious Mingo. (Tamba Hali is also going to be 29 and there isn't much behind him on the roster in terms of speed rush end.)

The Chiefs have set themselves up so as they've basically filled the roster holes through free agency (other than MLB), and they are now free to take who they feel is the best player available, whether that's Geno or Jordan or Joeckel or whoever.

This. Luxury Pick forthcoming, and my muse says Geno/Barkley. WIN.
