Teams do that because when you have a franchise starter (like Brees in New Orleans) it does little good to invest all that much money or that high of a draft pick in your backup. It's not a universal strategy, but it is quite common.

And we just gave one of those turds a bunch of money to actually play in the event of an injury to Alex Smith (which tends to happen every season, if only for a few games).

I admit to never having watched him play, but he's 6'1 220... not exactly midget material.

He also tossed for 72% and 4300 his senior year, so i'm inclined to say theres atleast some potential there, its seems he went undrafted because of his height and coming from a spread offense

I'm not arguing he's starter material, but he was considered one of the better FA backup options. He's a preseason warrior. I know that doesn't mean much, but I think my reasons for why he's a good viable backup option, makes better sense than some here and the argument that he sucks, because he sucks.
