This whole idea about "who's better, Geno or Alex" is the wrong way to look at it. It's not about who's better. That's impossible to know, because one of them has never been on an NFL field. It's all about risk and reward. Geno Smith is an unknown quantity, just like every QB who has ever headed into the draft. Some people see that as a negative, because it's an inherent gamble. Other people see that as a positive, because there's at least a remote chance for greatness there, in comparison to an established player like Alex Smith, who as a known quantity has limits which are well-defined by this point, and he's never going beyond them. So the question, then, comes down to whether it's better to go with the unspectacular but seemingly "safe" choice in Alex Smith, or to take a chance on an unknown like Geno Smith, who could be much more, but could also be somewhat less, depending on how it goes.

I think at some point you have to take that chance. Unfortunately I'm a fan of a franchise that seems to disagree.
