They outright rejected any and all Tebow talk with strong statements that Gabbert was their guy, and if Gabbert had been in this draft I don't think there is any question he'd have been the top QB selected.

Part of that is because when the QB gurus were and have been proven wrong they never backed off. They didn't learn any grace from being wrong multiple times while spewing hateful stuff all over the planet over and over. So they will not be given any for they do not deserve it. And BTW Michael Oher was a first round Tackle - and the Ravens won the Super Bowl. I bet if you look at the rosters of Super Bowl Champions, many have Tackles drafted in the first round...

Not in the last 12 years. First round left tackles just don't mean you are headed for a superbowl. It is a safe pick to try and keep jobs.

That's where our philosophical difference lies. First I don't think Fisher's a stud (or Joeckel or Johnson). I think they're middling prospects available anywhere from 15 to 45 in every draft. Although that's really neither here nor there. Second, I think a 'mediocre,' as you put it, quarterback prospect has more draft value than a good line prospect, because the upside value potential is so much greater. Basically I think positional value is a real and key thing.

Obviously the league disagrees with me, but the league is also slow to change and extremely risk averse. Whereas I have nothing to lose if a player I like doesn't pan out.

And I think everyone is making the same mistake they always make at draft time, judging these picks immediately. You judge these picks in 4 or 5 years, as the players head into their second contracts. If Fisher's an all pro, it turns out that the pick was okay (I don't think I'll ever call it 'great', it's such a meh position to draft #1). If Joeckel or Johnson's a better tackle, then we picked the wrong horse. If Geno never sees the field, the league was right, and if he's a pro bowler, the league was wrong.

Sure, Flacco playing well down the stretch last year got the Ravens over the hump. All due respect.

But, Baltimore is a solid organization from top to bottom that arguably evaluates talent better than any team in the league, that's why they won the Super Bowl.

You don't just draft a QB in the first round to say that you have a 1st round QB. There has to be 1st round talent there.

Alex Smith was about a quarter away from playing in a Super Bowl himself. It's not crazy to think he could elevate his game just a bit and win two more games than he won a season or two ago. He has been playing at a fairly high level in the Harbaugh era.
