Or at least the difference between that and 'try not to **** up' game manager.

I'm not looking for a 'mediocre' QB. I'm looking for a guy who's smart and poised and who recognizes when the running game has the hot hand, and when the clock needs run, when the D need a breather. Who doesn't hurt the team with unnecessary gambles. Who doesn't lose poise. Who's capable of the clutch score when needed.
Would Matt Cassel in 2010 fit that description? He was iffy on 'accurate', but the rest sounds similar. And yes I include "clutch" since they were 4-2 in games decided by a TD or less.

No, he was a 'our competition sucks on ice, don't **** this up for everyone else, game manager.'

Didn't do a damned thing against actual NFL competition.

Seriously, that was the easiest schedule in the HISTORY of the NFL.

I'm not sure how you can ascertain the difference, with the natural and understandable bias we all have regarding Cassel. I just wonder if this is perhaps a 'grass is greener' situation and you're giving more leeway to someone simply because he played not to lose (from my perspective) elsewhere rather than here.

I think the safest way to answer that is that I believe a "team commander" doesn't lose his job due to injury, regardless of how well the 2nd year player running a gimmick offense does in his stead.

Wait. Did you just equate Elvis Grbac to Alex Smith? That's like doing my job for me there.

The reason to hate Herman ****ing Edwards is the fact that he had did not evolve with the game.
He believed, and still believes that you win by running the ball, controlling the clock, and playing defense.
That formula is no longer a valid formula to win championships.

Jim Harbaugh and the staff did an outstanding job of minimizing Alex Smith's limitations by giving him opportunities to be successful on early downs.

There is, however, a reason that Alex Smith and the 9ers, were among the worst in the league at converting 3rd down opportunities.

Alex Smith's limitations.

Yes, he was leashed.

I remember Herm saying that "you can win by kickig FG's. "

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
