If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. Taking out the incomplete Rams game (concussion) from both QBs...
Alex averaged 26 attempts per game... Kaepernick averaged 27 attempts per game. What are we really talking about here? |

I may be wrong, but I think we're talking about the guy who calls the plays.

Harbaugh coached up Rich Gannon, coached up Josh Johnson, recruited Andrew Luck, groomed him into a unanimous concensus #1 draft pick, saw NFL ready potential in Kaepernick most scouts missed AND developed him from a raw prospect into a solid middle tier or higher QB. And I'm supposed to believe that Andy see's QB potential in Alex that Jim missed? OK, if you say so. I can't see it. I see what you are saying and time will tell the tale, but if Alex had franchise potential then the 49er GM could have picked a pass rusher or defensive back with that 2nd selection in 2011. The week Jim Harbaugh was hired by the 49ers, a reporter stuck a mic in his face and asked him about quarterbacks since Alex was a free agent and the lockout meant nobody could court free agents at the time Jim Harbaugh's instant response was, "Do we need a top-flight quarterback? Do human beings need air to breathe?" If Jim didn't see that potential in Alex, then it just not there. I've seen a lot of Alexsexuals say that maybe Alex will perform better after Jim Harbaugh than with him -- that he could still fill the elite potential that made him a 1st overall draft pick. That even as Harbaugh gave up on Alex for Kaepernick, that Alex could go somewhere else and still maybe become a franchise QB rather than a mid-tier journeyman. I just can't see Andy Reid being a superior judge of QB talent to Jim Harbaugh, and that doesn't account for the fact that Jim saw Alex every day in camp and practice for almost 2 full NFL seasons, while all Andy Reid has is game tape and hearsay. Even Dorsey remarked that one of the things that sold them on Alex was his mentoring of Kaepernick. Alex is ready made for mentoring his replacement while holding down the fort for him. Alex Smith? 6 years starting in Kansas City? I can't see it. |

We literally had NOTHING at the QB position. The only guy we had on the roster was David Carr... and we all knew what Jim thought of him. We basically HAD to re-stock at the QB position... so we selected an exciting "project" QB that wouldn't cost much at all. We also waited till round 2, so just how in love was Harbaugh initially with Kaep? Jim may have seen a lot in Alex... but it seems clear now that he sees MORE in Kaepernick. So be it. |

I quit liking the Browns when Shottenheimer left Cleveland. I quit liking the Chiefs when Schottenheimer resigned. This ain't rocket science. I was never a fan of Cleveland or KC as teams. I was a fan of Schottenheimer's and liked to watch his teams play and rooted for them to win. Massive difference from being a freaking Browns fan. It is not brain surgery figuring that one out. |

In addition, Don Avery adds speed and McCluster should be substantially better in Reid's system versus Daboll's. I also like Hemingway a lot. |

My point wasn't about WR. My point was if you don't trade away high picks for journeymen QBs, you can use 34th overall picks to fill a need. |

This is going to be an interesting offense to watch. A lot of different styles. It will either be innovate, and unusual, or a jumbled mess and disorganized.
