I don't like the depth we have at any of our linebackers spots. If Houston, Hali or DJ went down, we could be in trouble. I don't know if Jordan could slide to an OLB spot if needed. I would like to think he could.

In reality, it could have been a lot of things. The coaching was the worst in the NFL, game prep and play calling was the worst in the NFL, personnel grouping decisions were the worst in the NFL and so on.

My biggest concern with Allen Bailey at this point in time would be a lack of confidence in the player himself. Hopefully, the coaching staff realizes his strengths and weaknesses and are able to put him in a better spot this season, while reinforcing his ego.

I'd take Pitts, NEs, and Texans LBs over ours (I'm also including Nikovich as a 3-4 OLB). I'm also using the imaginary premise that they're all healthy.

You also forgot to mention Chandler Jones who shifts outside to a stand up on passing situations. No, DeVito is not a lateral move. He is a guy who came with the d coordinator, and was a huge loss for the Jets defense. Is a pure effort guy, relentless against the run, and not bad as a pass disruptor more than a pass rusher. He will also bring a true vet presence to the dline that wasn't there before. Now, do you even know who the starting lbs are for the Steelers to rank them over the Chiefs? Sorry, but drafting a rookie who may or may not have a spinal issue to replace James Harrison, should at the very least bring concern, and also, LaMar Woodley hasn't been healthy in two years. And to the Texans. They cant be ranked up there with many teams until Cushing proves he is healthy. That's just me.

Funnily enough, I think I'm less concerned with the defensive line than most because I feel we have a decent amount of guys to platoon. And there's a possibility that Poe could (and please let me emphasize, could) enter Beast Mode this season.

Those are fair concerns. But, the pass rush is going to help all of that. Also having Brandon Flowers healthy, and having Sean Smith being utilized CORRECTLY, is really going to help him. They are going to allow him to get physical with receivers. That's going to be a huge help to who ever is playing Free. And I think that Robinson is being crapped on unfairly. Hes going to play a big role for the chiefs.

Yes, I know who the starting LBs are for the Steelers. Despite the neck injury, Jones still has more upside/potential. Additionally, Timmons and Worlids aren't exactly chopped liver.

The texans are still loaded at OLB with Mercilus, Reed(who might be shifted inside), and Williams.

Analyzing Alex Smith: Air Yards, Completion Percentage, And Depth Of Targets

This past week he tweeted out some thoughts on some advanced statistical metrics that he feels help evaluate quarterbacks. These included “Air Yards” and “Average Depth Of Target”. Basically, these stats try to take a closer look at how well a quarterback really throws the ball.

“Air Yards” are the number of a quarterback’s passing yards that came from the ball being in the air. In other words, it breaks a QB’s passing yards into Air Yards and Yards After Catch. This allows you to see how much of a QB’s production was his throw as opposed to the yards his WR picked up.

The other stat on this chart that I looked at was Air Yards Per Attempt. This time a preference became clear. Look at the top ten QBs in air yards per attempt last season:
Colin Kaepernick
Eli Manning
Russell Wilson
Peyton Manning
Tony Romo
Drew Brees
Alex Smith
Andrew Luck
Robert Griffin III
Cam Newton

Here’s the bottom line on this study. There were only three QBs in the NFL that finished in the top 10 in terms of completing above the expected percentage rate for all four of the charted passing depths (behind the line of scrimmage, 0-9 yards, 10-19 yards, and 20+ yards). Those three QBs were Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Alex Smith.
“Yeah, but Lyle, Smith’s passes were all a bunch of safe check downs and Rodgers throws the ball all over the field!”

If that was your response then I remind you of the air yards per completion stat that I discussed earlier. Last season the average Alex Smith completion was in the air for 6.06 yards and for Rodgers that number was 5.82. So that argument doesn’t fly.

The point of this post was to show that the actual passes that Alex Smith has thrown and the percentage of completions he has had these past two seasons have a lot more in common with the elite QBs in the league than the Matt Cassels and Christian Ponders of the world. Jim Harbaugh didn’t throw those passes. Alex Smith did. He has shown he has the physical tools, and more importantly, the accuracy to excel.

So what? The guys who led the league with passes behind the line of scrimmage last year, was Rodgers, and Brady. Who gives a **** where the passes are thrown. 2nd and 3, is a damn good distance.

Tom Brady was 5th in pass attempts over 20 yards last year.

Alex Smith is literally afraid to throw the ball down the field...and that is why he sucks.
