Mostly you should be frightened that you made a post that sought to separate the two QBs, but it only made the comparison stronger when the data was revealed to you.

I think if you switch matt cassel and Alex Smith around, you will get very similar results.

ie Alex Smith on the Chiefs with Todd Haley and co would be a train wreck just like with Cassel

Matt Cassel on the 49ers under Harbaugh would perform much better


now who would be better on the Chiefs under Reid? I think it's pretty safe to say Alex Smith but i don't think the difference overall would be a big as you think.

I am never going to argue math stats with you folks, obviously that is dumb.

I see completely different players in these two QB's. the most glaring diff is that MC throws with a baseball wind up whereas AS has a normal desirable QB release. the next glaring diff is that AS has desirable ball placement whereas MC throws passes routinely that require WR's to be equipped with ass rockets in order to catch these "passes" that look more like punts or knuckle thrown baseballs that nobody seems to know where they end up.

MC's baseball pitcher from the stretch wind up gives defenses plenty of time to blanket the play. AS has a much quicker release and is actually pretty accurate throwing on the run, which is what you need in the NFL.

I'll take a look at his release point over the next month, but I don't recall he had the kind of variables in his motion you describe.

every QB has a couple trajectory points used to make certain types of throws, the good ones are very consistent and decisive as to which trajectory to use during a given play call. this area of AS's game is an area of strength, evidenced by his success throwing on the run.

but I'll keep this in mind as the season gets going.

The first thing I noticed about Smith's throwing motion was irregular position the nose of the ball points toward when he winds up. The nose of the football is directed outward at an abstract angle, pointing away during his windup. Smith had this low-and-away windup where the ball would get as low as his midsection.

This prevented him from having a quick release because in Smith's windup, the ball had to travel too far before it was airborne. Smith also repeatedly threw off-balance and with his numbers directly facing his target.

Part of the story. Alex's mechanics were off after he had his shoulder surgeries. In fact, he was blasted by a couple of NFL pundits for it. In off season prior to the 2012 season, he went to a throwing coach recommended by Drew Brees. Afterwards said pundits all remarked how much better his motion was.

That analysis is spot on, and it's not limited to that one person.

Back when we traded for Alex @TheFilmRoom on twitter was complaining about Alex's poor release. His low windup is one of the reasons he has so many fumbles throughout his career.

Anyway, the guy does not have a good release. It's better than Cassel's, but it's still pretty funky. It's not compact.

If you're going to make this comment, it applies to you as well...because if you really watched Alex, you'd have seen a huge difference in his motion form 2011 to 2012.
