This guy gets it, but sadly so many fans are so tired of being horrible they are happy to mortgage the future in an attempt to be average. Reminds of those that love the Shields/Myers trade.

1. You don't ever want your GM to realize that the talent you have is "wasted". You don't reguild in the NFL. Not anymore. Try selling tickets with that philosophy
2. I'm sure they are doing just that by solidifying the O line, grabbing a RB with tons of upside, a TE that could be a star, and a young promising MLB, as well as a very talented, yet raw, QB
3. They did aquire a very respectable stop gap QB. Last I checked, he hasn't played in the regular season or signed a long term contract.
4. I guarantee that with the 1.1 pick available to them, they did this. Heck, they had private workouts with Geno Smith, no? They just deemed none of them as franchise material at the 1.1 spot and probably couldn't trade out.

So, what they did isn't really too far off what most fans would have wanted. Maybe they paid a tad too much, but Carson Palmer doesn't run Andy Reids offense, and Neither does Campbell, so they did what they could to improve the team the best they could in year 1. Be interesting to see what they do over the next draft or two.

2a) Cardinals
2b) Giants

Cardinals have more WS wins, but the Giants have the next most and have an extremely rich tradition that features a ton of HoF players (the most in MLB history, last I checked), league titles, division titles, wins, playoff wins, etc. You can make a compelling case for both franchises as the second best all-time.

I think they did all these.

I'm not really that upset about smith in that I think he's a stopgap himself unless things change and he's better than we been in the past

1. I'd rather have a GM who is realistic and doesn't mortgage the future for minimal gains in the short term... unless those gains turn a playoff team into a legit championship contender... turning a crappy team into a fringe playoff team is not worth it.

2. And that group would be even more promising if the Chiefs had used their 2nd round pick this year to nab another young, promising player, whether at QB, WR, etc. Tyler Bray is a shithead with a big arm. That so many Chiefs fans are so hopeful about him, an UDFA signing, shows just how sad and pathetic this organization's approach to young QBs has been.

3. And they spent MUCH MUCH more on that stop-gap than they could have on other stop gaps who might not be quite as good but are close. Too much, unless he becomes a top 15 (near-elite) quarterback. The amount they spent makes it harder to do the long-term build (and makes it extremely difficult to move around much in next year's draft, leaving them reliant on luck for finding a QB in that draft).

4. It's obvious what evaluation was reached this year regarding QBs. But good luck moving on one or being in position to get one in the next draft. That's where the whole "hoarding of draft picks" thing comes in. Their flexibility in the next draft is limited, which will make it harder to move around and get a QB, if they like one.

Chiefs blew their load way to earlier in acquiring Smith. You had the Raiders, Bills, and Cardinals in the quarterback race. 49ers weren't trading with the Cardinals. They might have swung a deal with the Raiders, but that could also be a PR nightmare as well. Alex Smith is a weak arm for Buffalo. Should have forced the 49ers to cut him or trade at a lower cost. If he was a free agent, the bitching would have been almost zero as he would have clearly been viewed as a stop gap. You don't give up two premium picks for a stopgap.

I honestly do not understand the line of thinking that Smith will lead us to 'mediocrity' in the particular sense that he'll get us to the playoffs, but not the SB.

We've established over the past generations that regular season and post season are two different animals.

We've established through Eli that spotty regular season QBs can rise to the occasion in the post season.

We've established through the likes of Romo and Peyton that awesome regular season QBs can and often do choke in the playoffs.

We've seen Smith pull off one of the great comebacks of recent playoff memory against the Saints and nearly make the SB against the Giants [sans an Armageddon of STs play].

I can understand regular season pessimism, I can even see pessimism that Smith can even get us to the playoffs, but if one concedes that he gets us there, there is woefully little evidence that a playoff flameout is a fait accompli, and there is certainly more evidence to the contrary.
