Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs
Well, it looks like the deal is done.
https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed Jay Glazer @JayGlazer 49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith Jay Glazer @JayGlazer Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith. |

Saying Alex Smith was the best qb available without context does not mean very much
The question isnt "was Alex the best available", the question is "was the gap between Alex and someone like Matt Moore, Carson Palmer, or Jason Campbell worth 2 second rounders" |

Of course he is. Matt Moore has shown nothing but inconsistent play, more bad than good, Carson Palmer is nothing more than a complainer and doesn't do well in losing situations. And Jason Campbell despite knowing the offense, and being supported by the front office as they hate Brandon Weeden, couldn't beat him out. The gap is absolutely huge given what Andy Reid wants from his qb. he wants a mobile guy, something that Moore, and Palmer aren't, he wants an accurate guy which Campbell has not shown. People can slice it anyway they want. Alex Smith is heads and shoulders above them when you factor in everything.

The Chiefs never drafted a real prospect (unless you count Brodie Croyle) in 30 years because every time a guy that showed up at our spot in the draft, we said, "We've got other needs, we already have Veteran A and Shitty Prospect B, he's not worth the draft position we're at, oh **** it, just forget it. Trying just to try is EXACTLY how the Ravens ended up with Flacco. It's how the Dolphins got Tannehill. RARELY does a situation come along where taking the QB is so goddamned obvious to a team that people would lose their jobs if they DIDN'T draft him. That's what the Chiefs have been expecting for 30 years, that "the right" QB will just show up in the draft. Magically. So they say stuff like, "It'd be great to draft our own franchise QB, but it's dumb to try taking a QB just 'to try.' If we're gonna do it just to try doing it, we may as well be taking a K in the first round just to try it out and see if it works." And THAT'S dumb. |

It is also indisputable that the Chiefs have made radical and extensive changes in their view of what it takes to get better and compete for a championship. Some are glad to have tangible reasons for optimism. Others are determined to extinguish all optimism because some changes look too much like past changes. SDH and Claythan are like a cadre of Juden in the camps running around yelling at everyone 'I know you're starving, and I know you're being worked to death, but the showers are furnaces so get ready for more pain!! Suckers!!' Time may bear them out, but some people aren't in the mood for such talk at this juncture. Some want to hold out hope some of these new guys on the Chiefs are American GIs.

And the ravens didnt try just to try with flacco. They legitimately liked him as a potential franchise qb.
If our front office didnt think that about a guy, would you like tem to draft him anyway? |

it's the same old ****ing excuses
people just want to pretend they have some principled reason for defending 30 years of failed dependence on backups and vet QBs.... because the truth is, "oh no, it risky!" is all anyone is ever saying and it isn't high minded or pragmatic, it's just ****ing stupid

But yes, I would have at some point TRIED to draft a QB in 2013. Yep. Probably with the new first rounder I traded down with. And hey, if I don't like the QB value at THAT spot, then I trade down again. Get some more picks. Use those picks to make our team stronger. Even get an offensive lineman with one of them. ****, draft TEN offensive linemen. I don't ****ing care. But yes. I'm going to try to find a good QB. I've already got Alex Smith, so it's not like there's any pressure to make this work out. I'm (and here's that word again) TRYING to get my team in a position where it can enjoy long-term success no matter what happens to the surrounding roster due to injuries or cap troubles. |

In my ideal scenario, I'd like to see the Chiefs try something like Washington (if they have the right picks and the right prospects are there), where the Redskins took RG3, and as insurance they added another Qb with decent upside in Cousins. They did this all in one draft, and looking at their personnel now you could say they are pretty deep at Qb. I know RG3's don't come along often, but stud Qb's are invariably in every draft. The Chiefs just have to sack up and select some Qb's and develop them. Somebody asked me what I would do if I were Dorsey, and this is the scenario I'd plan for. |

A Bray that pays off has a higher ceiling than the rest of the 2013 class, it's just that the odds are longer. Your argument is like saying 'It's kind of pathetic that Chiefs fans are reduced to looking to draw a straight on The River, rather than collecting two pair like normal Hold-Em Players.' Well, the draft ended, and we had 10 J Q K suited and the A has not been dealt.

So why can't they do that next year in the draft, if they like a qb better? |

the ravens drafted Boller, then bounced right back and drafted a guy from ****ing Delaware.....
we've spent 30 years listening to fans complain about QBs being risky but hey we've avoided so much risk over the decades, we get a "Least Risk" ribbon every year from the nfl...

The Ravens liked Flacco as a prospect, sure. I can buy that. The Chiefs apparently liked Geno Smith according to The Bad Guy's source. But you're telling me they thought drafting a 1-AA QB who couldn't beat out Tyler Palko in college was smart drafting? That Flacco really was the best player available on their big board? That they said, "Hot dog, we'd mud wrestle our own grandmothers for a franchise QB right now, and lookee here. We got the perfect guy of our dreams right here! Yeehaw!" Bullshit. Bull ****ing shit. The team was in a QB quandry, their offense sucked balls, and they knew they couldn't keep winning with defense alone. Chris Redman failed. Kyle Boller failed. They said, "We've gotta fix this problem. I know we whiffed on those other QBs, but we gotta keep trying. Somehow, we need a real ****ing QB at the head of this team. So let's pull the trigger on Flacco, I guess. Yeah, he's pretty rough for a 1st round pick, but he probably won't be available later. Can't risk it. We need him NOW, so we'll have an experienced guy in the future." They took a shot. They TRIED. Because they needed a QB. And it paid off. When we're that desperate for QBs, our balls shrink in so far they shoot out our assholes. We get conservative and go into a shell when we need to stay strong and make bold moves. We trade for Alex Smiths. That's what we do. Hope it works out. |
