I'm just curious how representative this place is, compared with mainstream America on the question. A few threads of late, just got me wondering....

Thanks for the warm invite Mr K. There have been times I feel that I have something to contribute but I shy away from some threads because of the huge variances of a said beliefs. I strongly believe in the God of the bible and have devoted much time researching it. Many also claim the same but are very contradictory to the teachings of the book. Therefore it sadly becomes more of an opinion that is many times based upon personal feelings. If it was some kind a religious fact finding mission thread I feel I could be more injectful.

What are the Facts as you view them? Seriously.

I'm vaguely recalling you as a staunch, if not fundamentalist, believer....am I close?

You could call me a cautious humanist Christian I guess. I'm a church organist, so I'm in church as many Sundays as I can make it. It doesn't really pay to shut myself off from the very thing I'm surrounded by.I believe in a deity, that's for certain.

Being a musician, I find great peace and enlightenment in art and creation of art. That's the humanist in me. What we've created in terms of aesthetical beauty is incredible, and the real kicker is nobody knows why these things have an effect on us, other than a cultural phenomenon that rose as any society rose. I believe these pleasures were given to us by the deity to enhance our lives.

I'm cautious, however. I view the bible only has a source of history, and much of it is interpreted history at that. We know about the ancient Israelites predominantly from the Bible and the writings in 1 and 2 Kings. Other books like Daniel and Judges are more than likely satirical literature or allegories to express a political viewpoint at that time. That is how these books help us with history, more than anything. Daniel takes place during the period of forced Hellenization, and he refers to the Babylonian conquest of Judah to write a story in order to make his political statement on how best to throw off the Seleucid rule. Anyway, yeah... I don't view the bible as a foundation to my belief system and the holes in it make it shakey as a religious document.

I think intelligent design is stupid as a theory and shouldn't even be discussed in the public schools. Those who choose their own belief should learn about the natural way of things and wrap their beliefs around that particular knowledge. That's what education is for-- taking what you know, expanding it, and coming up with a new conclusion or keeping the same if that is the circumstance you have come to. It's called critically thinking, and the world would be a better place if more people did it.

So with that, I believe because it's convenient for me. Not because I need religion in my life.

What ever you call someone who wholey believes the bible because of much research and then tries to live by it...thats what I am.
As far as facts thats a big ol' can, but usually I try to let the bible speak for itself without my opinion.

I guess for example on your subject, the bible says that "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.”-John 13:35

So I believe what the bible says in that when you die you are simply dead, unconscious (which science also supports) and await the hope of a resurrection from God.
