I'm not looking for a 'mediocre' QB. I'm looking for a guy who's smart and poised and who recognizes when the running game has the hot hand, and when the clock needs run, when the D need a breather. Who doesn't hurt the team with unnecessary gambles. Who doesn't lose poise. Who's capable of the clutch score when needed.

Again, I freely invite people to assemble specific footage establishing that AS can never be that guy.

But

'He's mediocre'
or
'You're going to be bitterly disappointed'

is no argument at all.

Again, Favre and Rodgers are awesome. They also come along once in a generation.

Give me a guy with the attributes I've cited, and put a competent team around him, and I'll watch rapt.

I don't think they were elite, but I do think that in addition to poor coaching, there's some truth to the idea that an offense that couldn't convert 3rd downs or otherwise sustain drives contributed to poor defense.

Would Matt Cassel in 2010 fit that description? He was iffy on 'accurate', but the rest sounds similar. And yes I include "clutch" since they were 4-2 in games decided by a TD or less.

I'm not sure how you can ascertain the difference, with the natural and understandable bias we all have regarding Cassel. I just wonder if this is perhaps a 'grass is greener' situation and you're giving more leeway to someone simply because he played not to lose (from my perspective) elsewhere rather than here.

I stated last year SF made a mistake going to CK middle of the season so obviously I liked Smith then. I may have been wrong about the switch but when I was completely unbiased I thought Smith was good enough to take them to the SB.

No need to change my tune now because CP says I should.

If you put 2010 Cassel on the 2011 and 2012 Niner teams, my guess is he'd have success similar to that of Alex ****ing Smith.

Jim Harbaugh and the staff did an outstanding job of minimizing Alex Smith's limitations by giving him opportunities to be successful on early downs.
