Ok I found mine.

I have to sleep with a fan, or white noise (99.9% fan). Which usually means I take a fan with me when we travel. At home it's a huge, loud, thundering box fan. I CANNOT sleep without white noise.

I thought I was the only one that couldn't sleep without a fan. It started in the 60's growing up in Florida. We didn't have A/C until I was about 16, we had one of those attic fans that sucks air up into the attic. It makes a ton of noise. I've had a fan most of my life, been married 26 years and my wife is hooked also.

About ten years ago we went to Myrtle Beach and stayed at somebody's house and they didn't have a fan, I had to go to Walmart and buy a fan to have while we were there. Now I always take a fan unless we're staying in a motel that I know has one of those A/C units below the front window.

The worse time was when I was in the Army, but then I was either too tired to stay awake or too drunk. When I was in Korea we had the doors and windows open all the time on our quonset hut so I had a mosquito net on my bed. When the weather got cold I was the only one that still had their mosquito net on their bed. I got use to it and couldn't sleep without that net. I think that was my replacement for a fan.

I don't need white noise at all, but maybe it's because tinnitus provides all that I need.

The television keeps my mind off of the crickets that are always there.

I don't think I could handle tinnitus. I think I'd rather be deaf.

The weird thing is that I don't know if I have it or if it's normal. If I'm sitting alone and it's reasonably quiet, I just hear a high-pitched whine. It's quite noticeable if I think about it, but I can tune it out without any effort. Is that tinnitus or is that just normal ears?

That's tinnitus. The presence of noise without an external source. Something like 1-12 adults has it, most being over 60 years old.

Is your hearing normal? Have you had it tested?

I've had it tested and for the most part my hearing is normal other than a few frequencies. I never asked about the whine because it's always been there. It's kind of loud if I sit and listen to it (kind of like ringing ears after a rock concert), but again it's really easy to tune out, especially if there's any other noise present.

The weird thing is that I actively avoid noise. I've heard that it can happen if you're around loud noise a lot, but I've never had a lot of exposure to loud noise.

Are you certain someone isn't following you with a small, high-pitched noise machine?

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

There's someone following me all the time, but I've never asked whether he has a noise machine. That's a good thought.
