I think they’re gonna end up paying Brown Jr but at a fungible contract that won’t hurt the team. They know how hard it is to find even decent LT’s like Brown Jr.

I think they stick with him due to pride and the knowledge that even with his struggles he’s an acceptable LT that isn’t a full blown disaster. I think they also stick with him bc they don’t want to use resources to fix something they traded a first rd pick for; they’d rather use resources to make the team stronger overall.
OBJ is one of the more proud players I've ever seen in this league.

I don't think there's a chance he takes less than what the Chiefs offered him last off-season without going to the market and seeing it collapse. And ultimately I don't think it will - there are teams that could absolutely put him to better use than we can.

And from my chair, he hasn't played to the level of the contract he already declined.

I don't think a 'fungible contract that won't hurt the team' is in the cards. OBJ simply won't be able to swallow his pride and accept one.

So in the end, do you think we overpay? Or do we let him walk?

How about we let Brown walk, take the #3 comp pick, and sign Yosh Nijman, RFA from Green Bay for an average starting LT deal? Green Bay cannot cut Bahktiari, nor would they want to if he's back healthy, and they can't pay two LT's.

And then we can just get on with our lives.

We'll let him walk.

If Veach was unwilling to overpay last off-season with OBJ showing improvement as the season progressed to the point he was actually quite good by the end of the year, he's not going to do it after this season.

And frankly Brown isn't likely to get MORE reasonable now that the Chiefs tag leverage has been reduced.

This just looks for all the world like an impasse that can only be resolved through a tepid market.

I worry that they've left themselves without a net a bit. Like you said, the FA tackle class is looking pretty rough.

I mean if Brown's not the route you take, you may end up having to accept someone at Browns level who just comes cheap. You okay replacing Brown with someone that may actually be a hair worse if he costs 1/2 as much? Because that's George Fant. McGlinchy is probably in a similar tier.

I wonder who the Jags have as pending FAs. JaWaan Taylor is still only 24 and he'll be a FA at the end of the year. I really liked him coming out of Florida and he's developed into a pretty good tackle.

The problem is that I can't think of anyone on that team that would be a tag consideration. Even money says they'll tag Taylor if they can't get a deal done. He's a talented young OT who's just coming into his own - those guys get 'surprise' tags all the time. The last one, ironically, being Taylor's opposite number when the Jags tagged Cam Robinson.

The Jags drafted Walker Little in the 2nd round in 2021 - do they really want to spend that kind of money on Taylor to bury Little for another year?

Taylor may honestly be the best we could hope for and he's gonna cost a little bit. And you'd want to be pretty confident he could transition over to LT.
I'd think they'd just bite it and pay OBJ at that point vs having to take a chance like that at LT.

If it's not OBJ next year,.....I think it's trade up to get the one you like in the draft.

I keep offering a perfectly reasonable option, and everyone keeps ignoring it.

I'm a bit fuzzy on the RFA stuff, but I dont' think that would even be an option with what GB could do.

I just don't see how they can sign OBJ long-term at this point. It would likely require them to up their already high offer and I don't see the Chiefs being willing to do that, considering what they have to do to help him.

If I was Veach I’d offer him the same contract as last year. It appears that Brandt Tillis worked that contract to protect us.

If Brown Jr refuses, slap the transition tag on him. That’s a top 10 average pay instead of top 5 like the franchise tag.

Brown Jr can go into FA and see if any team is willing to pay him that ridiculous record breaking contract. When they don’t he’ll know his worth and (hopefully) understand that he’s not worth that.

If he doesn’t want to take Veach’s offer bc he wants record breaking money, then you refuse and look at your options.

I'm not even comfortable offering him what they offered him before. He can accept $16 million a season or he can kick ****ing rocks.

I don't know what the **** happened to him between last year and this year...but it's going to cost him millions.
