Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

He’s not doing that.. He has a plan and I bet it’s someone that we aren’t thinking of that turns out brilliant….. I hope..

Like I said, putting all of your eggs in the "trade up and take a tackle" bucket has a much higher chance of failing than working. He better have a backup plan.
Two years ago we needed a LT after the Fisher injury and getting cut. Veach went for Williams and failed because he wanted to stay with SF. Instead Veach pivoted and got Brown in a trade along with Bolton and Creed in the draft. I trust that he has a plan B. I just can’t see him being caught off guard by not signing Brown.

I would bet that Veach is thinking something like an Andre Dillard reclamation project where you can get him on the cheap, paired with a high draft pick with upside. I think Dillard fit the previous regime's pass emphasis and not so much the run-first Hurts era Eagles but he had some injury issues early and then just wasn't a great fit this season for what The Eagles wanted to do.

Sign Jawaan Taylor to play RT. Trade up in the draft using picks from next season to draft the best LT prospect in the 20-22 pick range. Draft a developmental LG in rounds 4-7 so you can walk away from Thuney in two seasons when Humphrey and Smith need to get paid.

In 2021, when he cut Fisher and Schwartz, landing OBJ seemed like a coup. While it certainly worked out well enough, OBJ isn't any great LT. He's serviceable at a difficult to fill position.

I'm sure they have a plan B and probably plan C.

Just draft a LT and play Niang at RT.

Draft and develop. They're here, shouldn't be a problem.

Obviously I think we are going to invest in the OL this draft. That being said, I would want a vet to hold it down this season or part of, at least.

Everyone wants to go to "draft and develop" route until it comes time to actually do it, then they want a vet.

Grow some balls here guys. If you trust this group to continue to hit on draft picks, why the need to have a vet insurance policy? Creed didn't need one. Trey didn't need one. McDuffie etc.

That's not at all what he said.

There's prudent and there's reckless.

Prudent would be to draft a guy AND sign a vet just in case.

Reckless would be to draft a guy and just expect to plug him in and go.

You gotta take the emotion out of this. The Chiefs aren't screwed. Nobody is saying that at all. They're just asking for some ****ing common sense.

They need to sign some depth and vets on the DL. You've only got so much $ to go around I've been told.

Absolutely. Don't think for a second I don't trust Veach. All I'm saying is that Veach shouldn't approach this the way people on here say he should. In fact, I'm willing to bet he WON'T approach this the way people on here think.

There are guys who can chase a DE outside like OBJ did with Patrick stepping up and creating plays.. Run blocking is a bonus..
