** OFFICIAL: "Do You Believe in God and an Afterlife?" Thread**

Simple question.

I'm just curious how representative this place is, compared with mainstream America on the question. A few threads of late, just got me wondering....

Please feel free to discuss.

I'd probably be a more spiritual person if it weren't for most of the religious folks I've met. Various Christians have been giving me doubt as to the existence of a capital G God since I was a child. From the nun who told me when I was 8 y/o that I was going to hell for wearing corduroy pants to school, to the protestants who took a bunch of 7th graders on a "retreat" so they might scare the shit out of us in an effort to save our souls (from what I don't know) to the church people of all kinds who ring my doorbell despite my "no soliciting" sign so they can talk to me about my religious beliefs.........and then tell me, "Oh, we're not soliciting, we're from the fill-in-the-blank church!". Not to mention the Christian fundamentalists who want to decide what I watch on tv or what my daughter learns in school.

So on the one hand I look around me at the wonders of the world and the miracle of life and think that there must surely be a higher power. But then I think, if there is a capital G God then why would the capital H He want the most obnoxious people I've met in my 47 years on the planet acting as his agents? C'mon, if He is God can't he find some better spokespeople?

No offense meant to all the well meaning, good deed doing, sincere folks of all religions in the world. I know you are out there, but I think you're outnumbered within your own ranks.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that if 95% of people believed in god in your eyes that the other 5% must be atheist, so the amount of people that believe they are sinners couldn't be 100%, it would be 95%, for sinner is a religious term.

I almost made the following question a thread but thought it might be pushing the mods tolerance level.

If you believe in a creator(s), do you believe they are all knowing and all powerful?

Personally I do not think such a being or beings is likely.

Absolutely logical, I almost made this point but knowing John the way I do, I figured it would just bait him into his old ways.

To each his own but you really owe it to yourself to do some extensive unbiased research on both subjects.
