Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

Really? The Giants spent multiple round 1/2 picks on pass rushers. The Niners spent a top 10 pick on Aldon Smith. The Ravens spent top 10-12 picks on Ngata and Suggs.

I'd rather have a Watt, Peppers, Ngata, Smith over any CB in the league. Safety is a completely different subject.

Again with the stupid hyberbole. Nobody thinks Geno Smith is the only QB in this entire draft worth a shit. NOBODY.

You can't guarantee that they WILL be there either.

Aldon Smith isn't a defensive lineman. Neither is Suggs.

the #1 pick is going to get $25M guaranteed for 4 years no matter what position it is...

if it's anything other than QB I'm going to be irritated but if they do go away from QB I'm just saying I PERSONALLY would prefer WR, RUSH BACKER or DB in that order. And a RUSH BACKER would be an absolute luxury pick on a team with NO QB since we have two pro bowl rush backers already.

drafting an OL or DL #1 overall on this team this year is a ****ing waste of a pick and it'll make me very unhappy

I want one of the best QB's in the draft. That doesn't mean one of them won't be there at 34.
If Geno lights it up tomorrow and at his pro day and becomes a top 10 pick, then take him 1st overall, but right now that's just not the case, as hard as that is to swallow.
Thats fine.

But I don't think there will be one there at 34. I'm pretty terrified if we go with a non Qb at 1, we're gonna be choosing from Manuel/ Landry Jones type guy there.

Barkley, Glennon, Smith, and probably Wilson will be gone early and I'd bet teams trade back up to get who's left. I don't really want to be stuck trading back up, because teams know we need a QB and thats a case where we could absolutely get ass raped on a trade up.

What pass rusher should we take at 1/1 and how is this individual getting on the field?

dude I'll take a Von Miller #1 overall if there is a Von Miller even if it is a luxury pick...he's a playmaker

look if you could GUARANTEE ME JJ Watt then yeah, of course...sign me up

but don't blame me that Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey (top 5 picks) make me want to vomit thinking about spending a #1 overall pick on a 5 tech or a NT (considering we just ****ing drafted Poe #11 overall, too)

so yeah

again

at #1 I think it's QB or bust...

I would live with (but be disappointed) with WR, RUSH BACKER or DB (in that order) if there is an elite playmaker in any of those groups.

why you ask?

BECAUSE WE NEED PLAYMAKERS...not lineman

If we want a pass rusher who will immediately have a spot, it would have to be Shariff Floyd or Sheldon Richardson.

You being a MU fan can elaborate on him for us.

Richardson isn't playing in a 3-4. Neither is Floyd.

see I agree it would be a luxury pick and we'd have to hybrid up our defense a bit...

but at least a Von Miller would be worth the #1 pick in today's NFL

Luke Joeckel is not.

If we're going to have the #1 pick we need to use it on something that is worth the #1 pick like a QB, or a rush backer, or a freakishly talented WR.

if there is no Von Miller or Percy Harvin or Calvin Johnson or Deion Sanders in this draft then just take ****ing Geno Smith and if he ends up sucking I know I personally won't hold it against this regime. Not one bit.

I don't know why you're being so dense. You guys are twisting the argument to a place it doesn't need to go, for no reason. Terrell Suggs and Aldon Smith both played DE in college.

Actually, IIRC, thats what they are projected as. 34 DE's.

If you were telling me that there was no way I could take Geno, Wilson, Barkley Nassib, or FFS, even Glennon and I had to take someone from another position, I'm probably going with Sheldon Richardson. He'll be on the field at DE, playing the 4/5 tech in base fronts and the 3 tech in subs primarily. I'd also consider Floyd, Moore, and Jordan.

Of course they did, but they weren't drafted as linemen, and that's all that matters.

I'm with Hoot on this one; playmaker at 1/1 or GTFO.
