I would be fine with Berry walking even though he is one of my favorites. I just hate to see his contract become crippling and cost us possibly at another position. A big reason he is so valued is because Kendrick Lewis and Co. were soooo bad.

"Eric Berry's demands were astronomical"

You guys are ****ing hilarious

4X pro bowler, 2X first team All-pro and just came off NFL comeback player of the year and you think he's making crazy demands bc he wants to get paid the same $$ that Earl Thomas was paid.

The Chiefs not thinking Berry is worth that much is fine, but if you were Eric you'd do the same damn thing and you know it.

He should be here. He wasn't cheated, he wasn't low-balled. He was given a fair offer, he thinks he can do better and that's his right. It's also his goddamn job to be in here working with his teammates.
All true, but so far down my list of priorities or worries about the Chiefs, I just can't find any emotional spark to care. I would guess he's going to sign in the next few days, likely will be ready to go for the 3rd preseason game, which is the dress rehearsal for the starters, and still going to have 3+ weeks of practice before the opener.

If he wasn't a proven vet, who knows the defense like the back of his hand, and a guy who everyone knows keeps himself in top shape with a great work ethic, I could maybe be a bit more ticked about the circumstances.

Berry doesn't just want to be the highest paid safety. He wants more than that. He's entitled to ask for whatever he wants, but the Chiefs are certainly not at fault for choosing not to overpay, and I agree with that decision.

If I were Berry...I wouldn't want to be stuck in dorm at St. Joe either. I'd be chilling at my mansion...driving my Porsche to train on my own.

Just sayin...

Apart from health issues (and it's a definite concern that gets worse the longer he sits out), the issue isn't with Berry's grasp of the defense, its with everyone else's.

Like I said, without Sean Smith mauling guys on the other side of Peters, this defense is going to have to do things differently. How much differently remains to be seen, but it's important to have the 'quarterback' of your secondary in there to know exactly how that's going to work.

If it takes the secondary a couple of weeks to gel, time that we won't have Houston for, that's a problem. If we're extremely lucky, the DL and the offense can cover for it, but it's whistling pass the graveyard to act like Berry's going to show up and this secondary is just going to hum like he'd been here all off-season. It just doesn't work that way.

It also has plenty to do with Berry the player being here and building a rapport with his teammates; many of whom are new to this system. We will be playing much different football in our secondary without Smith. He allowed us to do some unique things that an incredibly physical corner allows you to do. We don't have that so things are going to have to be done a little differently. All that will be determined by how the parts fit together and how they can interact together.

But we won't know any of that because a key cog in the secondary won't get his ass into camp so we can find out. So hey, I guess we'll just find out when the bullets start flying in September, eh? Lots of margin for error in a 16 game season; no worries, EB...

again, you're articulating things which have no reality to anyone actually on the football team...

i'd wager a lot of money that not a single player disagrees, much less cares, with Berry's choice...nor are they worried about his status as a 'leader'...Berry's proven it the only place that matters - on the field

but anyways, we don't have to speculate about what the players might think..we're just talking about your ginned up definition of what a leader is in the nfl...which pertains to nothing

None of Sean Smith's teammates said anything publicly about his suspension or even his refusal to appeal it.

I'm betting they were all pretty irritated when he wasn't on the field, though. And when they lost a couple more after he got back, do you really think they weren't sitting there thinking "y'know Sean, this would've been a hell of a lot easier if you'd have just caught a cab..."

What they say and how they actually feel are two separate animals and it's all the worse if things don't go perfectly when the parts are back in place. Berry's doing nothing but increase the odds that we get out of the blocks slowly, much like last season. Winning the division is a huge benefit for advancing further. HFA all the more so. If they really believe they're a SB team, how could they not be frustrated by Berry not being there to further that cause?

DJ could be out there milking 'injuries' right now but he knows his clock is ticking and being out there with the defense helps a great deal. Maclin could be spending his days riding the warmup bike but he's out there battling with his teammates in pursuit of the same goal.

There's no way competitors with sights on a championship aren't irked by Berry not being there and it will only get worse if they don't hit the ground flying in that secondary.

Then you're betting on the side that says they're cavalier about their pursuit of a championship.

Good luck with that...

Moreover, you continue to sidestep the actual football issue; these guys in the secondary need to play together and it's not happening. That's a problem. And Berry's going to be more likely to get injured because he hasn't been working into football shape. That's a problem. But keep on knocking down straw men if you'd like.

How is it "smart business" when he's guaranteed to earn $10.8 million this year?

He's not "holding out" in order to renegotiate a contract; that time has passed.

And the "he wants to miss training camp" excuse is super shitty: The NFL doesn't have 3 A Day practices nor do they have Two A Day practices. It's ONE 2 hour and thirty minute practice, which is less than a game.

The only thing that his refusal to sign the tender has shown is that he's selfish.

He's not helping or leading his teammates, he's turning his back on them.

If he gets hurt significantly doing something he's not required to do, 10.8 million could be the max he's gonna get for the rest of his career.

I'm guessing we'd have seen the same thing from Houston last year had the stuff not gotten worked out.

It's perfectly fine if Dorsey doesn't want to pay Berry that much. But criticizing a player with an elite resume wanting to get paid more than anyone else on a long-term deal is laughable.

When can Berry enter into contract negotiations again ? Does it have to be after the season or can we get to him earlier ?

I have a feeling the NFL won't allow Franchise Tagged players to sit out training camp in the next CBA.

It's a stupid loophole that helps no one.
