****Official Weight Loss and Exercise Thread****

I know that TinyE has the CP Weight Loss Challenge thread, but this is a new beginning for me. No losing weight for prizes, as that motivation ended on July 1st. This time I'm doing it for me. My goal is 75 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race. This time, the prize will be a whole new me.

Anyone else still battling the bulge? Here, hopefully, you can find more encouragement and tips on diet and exercise. Feel free to talk about discouragements, setbacks, frustrations, etc as well. We're here to help...at least I am.

so sugars/bad carbs/HFCS/artifical sweeteners, et al raise your insulin levels. by doing so, make it harder to burn fat?

and speaking of burning fat...
I think I read somewhere on here that it's usually best to do cardio/aerobic stuff in the morning (or whenever you wake up)? Is this also because you insulin levels will be lower in the morning?

Yup. The only one I'm not entirely sure about is Splenda. So far, the evidence for it spiking blood sugar is inconclusive. Seeing what other sweeteners do, though, it wouldn't surprise me if Splenda did it, too. I stay away from all of them, just in case.

Stevia is the best bet. From the research I've done, it seems to not spike insulin at all. Of course, it's way expensive comparatively.

I remember what Jack La Lanne said once when being grilled about food. Let me make it simple for you. If man made it, I'm not eating it.

Yup. Your body won't burn fat if insulin levels are raised. It doesn't think it needs to, because insulin signals the presence of a faster energy source in carbs.

Your body goes into ketosis at night because you aren't eating. So, yes. You can do the same thing exercising at night, provided you haven't eaten for about 6 hours before you work out. Something I'm doing right now is working out in a fasted state (always in the morning for convenience) and then not eating for 2 hours after I finish my workout. Really helps burn.

I like to work out in the morning because it, supposedly, kickstarts your metabolism and gets you burning calories more efficiently first thing. I also don't know if there's any truth to it, but I read somewhere (I think it's a Flat Belly Diet thing) to drink a large glass of water as soon as you wake up (kill it) before you do anything else. Supposedly this kickstarts your metabolism and gets you out of ketosis quicker. It might be psychosomatic, but I swear that my belly did get tighter pretty quickly after I started that practice... and I didn't increase my ab work at all (in fact, I decreased it).

I don't know why you'd want to get out of ketosis in the morning before working out if your goal is to lose body fat. I also don't see why water would help, because what gets you out of ketosis is an increase in insulin levels. But hey, if it worked for you, why change it?

Artificial sweeteners don't spike your blood sugar but they do cause an insulin response. To be honest, if you are eating carbs, you would probably never notice as that effect is much larger.

After I went meat only, I had to cut out all AS because it would cause me to release insulin, which lowered my blood sugar and would make me dizzy and sick to my stomach. I had been a huge Diet Pepsi addict, basically since aspartame was invented. I haven't had any since early September and haven't really missed it. I only drink plain water and seltzer water now and my blood sugar is rock solid.

Yeah, I meant spike insulin, not blood sugar. Sorry, I'm sitting in an art history class while I post . . . making me mix my words.

If you want to join a gym, join a 24 hour gym.

Or, spend your hour at home winding down with a good exercise video.

Even if you just squeeze in three workouts a week, you will start to make a difference.

good to know. I'm easing into this deal. first was no beer; then this week for lunches and dinners salads, and meals without 'bad' carbs/smaller portions. Next week I'm going to get on the treadmill in the morning; and at the first of the year I'm going to lift 2-4 days / week.

Strangely, I feel better already. I'm sure I haven't changed physically, but I feel good/alert etc.
