(Aug. 30, 2005) -- Free agent defensive tackle Corey Simon is now on the clock. And he is not expected to be on the clock long.

Simon's agents said they spoke with eight teams, including the Colts, Giants, Bengals, Packers, Bills and Seahawks.
The Colts' interest is intriguing on many fronts. Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy would be able to deploy Simon in much the same way he used Warren Sapp in Tampa Bay. But the question becomes whether the cap-strapped Colts can afford Simon, who rejected a $12 million signing bonus from the Ravens during the offseason.

Simon is seeking enough money that the Ravens, who once really wanted Simon, admitted they will be unable to pay him what he wants now. And so Simon, who was released by the team, is seeking the best offer and best situation before deciding where to play.

A decision should be made by early next week, but to date no visits were scheduled. And none might be. Numbers will do the talking here, and Simon is vowing to be ready to play in the regular-season opener -- wherever that is.

Did anyone really think he would sign with the Chiefs? I thought he would be a nice addition, but I never gave the situation any serious thought. There's no way he plays in KC except on an opponents team...

Exactly - and some team will do just that. It more about signing bonus than it is salary these days.

A bigger push up the middle would make our pass rush a lot better, and our pass defense is still a big concern.

would be even better if Simon was a DE ... but he's not and we have to deal with what's available

I could be wrong (wouldn't surprise me any) but I thought no contracts at this point can run beyond 2007 when the current CBA runs out. That's only 3 seasons.

You're correct within the confines of HC's statement. IIRC, because of the uncapped year, no signing bonus can be spread over more than the next four years. The contract itself can cover a longer period, but not the pro-rating of the bonus.

Eagle FA bust? I bet you can't name a single former Eagle, especially a defensive player, who left to sign a huge contract with another team only to flame out.

Yep. D-Line is a glaring weakness for us right now (given that Trent is really ok).
