Man...some people.

About three years ago, I needed some people to do some door to door surveys for a couple of weekends, and some woman got recommended to me. I brought her on - purely temporary - and she did fine.

She then applied for a job at my firm, but she didn't have any qualifications for what we do, and I kind of let her down easy on that.

Then, lo and behold, several months later I got a call from a large federal agency that she had applied to, and she had listed me as an employment reference. I was not impressed by that, but I told this other organization that she did some temporary work for me and she did a good job. I had nothing against the woman.

Fast forward a couple of years, and we submitted a proposal for a project with a local government. There was one other bidder, which was this large federal agency. (Don't even get me started on paying taxes so they can compete with me.) Anyway, they came in at about twice our price, and the client hired us. Apparently, this woman was pushing hard for her agency to get hired, even though she's a peon there.

The project lasted about a year, and we had our final presentation tonight. The client had informed me a few times that this woman had met with the elected officials at the client and had made disparaging remarks about my company and tried to get them to fire us. The client was not impressed, and basically thinks she's a crackpot.

So anyway, this woman showed up at the presentation tonight, and after we finished our presentation, she made a beeline for the elected officials, and right in front of me, started criticizing our work and trying to embarrass me.

So ... she's got a job that she obtained in part by listing me as a reference. We've paid her as a temp in the past, and I've never been anything but nice to this woman. And for an entire freaking year, she's been doing everything she can to damage my reputation, just out of self-interest and with no regard to me helping her. What an idiot. Some people are unbelievable.

I went up to her afterward, and said, "You remember me, right? You listed me as a reference to get this job. I've always been nice to you. What's your problem?" She just laughed and walked away.

I was ticked off, and it would be very easy to embarrass the living daylights out of this woman, and probably cost her her job. I don't think this agency would condone her behavior at all, because she's presenting herself as someone at a much higher level than she is. However, I cooled off on the way home, and recognized that she's nothing but a gnat. I think we're better off ignoring her and treating her like a person of no consequence.

Amazing how some people will make an enemy out of an ally for no reason.

It sure ticks me off, though.

Okay, so this woman called me this morning and said, "I got the impression that you were mad at me last night. Is there a problem?"

I'm not real good at diplomacy, so I said, "Yeah. You've been slandering me for a year now, culminating in last night's meeting. What's your problem?"

She then vociferously denied ever saying anything or doing anything, and I'm thinking, "I was standing right next to you. I was two feet away from you." And my sources for the past year have been unimpeachable.

Kind of silly, actually, but I hope that she'll at least back off of this stuff. I think it's easier to stab someone when you don't ever talk to them or see them. Kind of like how I'm always backstabbing JimNasium.

I'd turn the planet loose on the nag.

Your planet army will savage her until she hefts a large boulder piggy back to your yard in effort to make amends.

I think you should call her employer and express your views.

Yeah, that's a bit of a concern. I made sure to say nothing to her that wouldn't look good in a newspaper.

Sounds like she's pissed you didn't hire her. That and you neglected to introduce her to Willie-the-one-eyed-wonderworm....

It sounds as though it is fairly clear that she has made at least one materially false, fictitious or fraudulent statement or representation, which is a violation of federal statutes.

If it were happening to Bob Dole, Bob Dole would report the bitch to the OGE in a heartbeat.

If brainman doesn't call her employer, I'll be sorely disappointed. You need to at least document that there is an issue, in case it gets worse down the road.

I think a transcript of the conversation would be great to document here also.

Definitely agree. She lied to your face whenever she knew you witnessed her doing what she's denying having done. You think her boss is aware of anything she's been doing? He'll probably never know unless he gets told.

The thought has occurred to me that perhaps the federal agency really didn't bid, and that this woman submitted a bid on her own claiming to be the federal agency. That would explain why she has taken such a personal interest on this contract. Who at a mammoth federal agency would get so ticked off about losing a local contract to a small company? I'd love to have a peek at that proposal.

They wouldn't.

If a federal agency were bidding a contract like I assume you're talking about, I'd think most often it would be in regards to another major project.(sample set for next census) or something like that.

Considering that govt is "non profit" by code, I'd see a red flag. Govt entities often do projects at a fee, but I can't imagine a reason for them to be upset to the point of making a stink a year later.

Something else is going on.....you've got a reputation and a business to protect. I think I'd speak with the officials from your presentation as well as her employer.

no doubt, I'd call her boss....and if that went nowhere...her boss' boss.

I would think that too. If a federal agency wanted a contract that bad, they'd send someone with more experience. She might be included, but I doubt they'd send her on her own. And I doubt they would authorize her to slander you and your company.
