Randy Covitz: Super Candidates

Super candidates

Here's a thought.

As Scott Pioli contemplates the future of Herm Edwards and his 6-26 record of the past two seasons, he might want to consider there are four coaches who have won Super Bowls in the past 10 years on the open market.

They are: Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, Brian Billick and Mike Shanahan.

That doesn't include Tony Dungy, who retired at age 53, or Dick Vermeil, who already had his day in Kansas City.

Go back two more years, and there's Mike Holmgren, who plans to sit out this year.

Pioli is not hurting for candidates.

Nuff said, thread over. (I'll refrain from calling you a reerun)
I see the point about all these guys being on their 2nd jobs. But...

Now, maybe I am in fact some sort of reerun, but wouldn't just about all of these guys be on their 3rd job if we hired them? So, what does this (point about their 2nd job) have to do with anything?

If this is the trend then shouldn't we be looking for a coach who's looking for their second head coaching job? Just seems like a moot point as far as this list of "candidates" is concerned.

The best coach out there right now is Mike Shanahan IMO.

As much as it hurts to say. You know if he came here to KC he'd love to put and ass stompage on DEN and OAK.

And if for some reason LT can't get his game back to par, SD could have issues and will continue to have them as long as Norv Turner is there.

Get some coaches that know wtf they're doing on defense and this team isn't as far off as many people think.

The fact is, until the last couple or 3 years, the trend in the NFL had been to hire retreads.

But recently that trend has turned.

The SB this year will be won by a coach in his first stint as a HC, and there's a 75% chance that that HC will be in his third year or less on the job.

You can cross Cowher off your wish lists.

He is going to want personnel control, and Scott Pioli isn't going to give that up.
