The 49ers KNEW they had issues with the WR position and while their first rounder was a dud and Manningham was injured, Alex Smith still turned in the best passer rating of 2012.

Harbaugh's guy was Kaepernick, who has a very unique skillset. If he hadn't been able to run for so many touchdowns, the 49ers wouldn't have won as many games after he replaced Smith. He's a beast to defend, no doubt. But Alex Smith isn't and never was a dual threat, which is gaining popularity in the NFL, so to suddenly claim that Smith was a "backup" is ludicrous.

Kaep is also a better passer. I'd have no problems with Smith if it wasn't the 34th pick and the fact that Reid thinks he's the QBOTF. If we were to take Geno, Barkley, Wilson or even ****ing Nassib/Manuel, with Smith I'd be fine.

The fact that this regime appears to be doing the same thing in trading for another teams backup while failing to address the QB position for the future makes me sad.

I've seen enough to know what Alex Smith is, and that is NOT an elite QB... which is where I set the bar. If the Chiefs and this fan base are fine with mediocre/average QB's, then so be it... I'm not. Go ahead and say Alex Smith has the potential to be Elite...

The problem with all of the "Gloom and Doom" happening in this forum for the past few days is that first off, the compensation hasn't been confirmed and secondly, no one knows what Dorsey and Reid have planned for the future of the QB position.

Clearly, they feel that there is no one in this draft ready to lead this team to the playoffs in 2013. With the window of opportunity closing on players like Hali, Johnson, etc., they acquired a QB they believe can win now and win big.

All this posturing about "Well, Smith will NEVER lead a team to the Super Bowl" is just that: Posturing. Moreover, it's ****ing bullshit because I seriously doubt that many of these very same fans have watched Alex Smith consistently over the past two seasons. They just want to whine and complain because for the past 6 months, it's been the "In Thing" to do.

Will this acquisition provide the results that Reid and Dorsey want? Who knows. Seriously, who ****ing knows? But to state that Alex Smith is Matt Cassel or that Smith won't win but six games a year and so on is just plain ****ing stupid.

He'd likely have to win several times on the road against NE, Denver, Pitt, Baltimore, Cincy, Houston, Indy. I remain pessimistic but if he proves he can do it, awesome. There is literally nothing other than a small sampling that shows he can perform at playoff winning level.

I just think personally, it is silly to think that he's going to turn into an all star QB when he's very rarely showed flashes of doing so.

In short, I would have no problems with Smith if they didn't A) Give up #34 to get him and B) they drafted one of the top 5 QBs to sit behind Alex. Just my personal take on it.

Dane and I. Gettin ready to ride again! THIS. IS. NOT. LIKE. CASSEL. It's just not. So much more has been proven from Smith than was ever proven from Cassel. It feels similar, but it's not. Don't love it, don't care. This is not the same hopelessness that came from the Cassel trade.
